Thanks for the input. I am not prepared to run at night or real foul weather. I have only had the 54 for 5 months and while an experienced boater, not in the ocean. Our Robertson autopilot is done and so, until we replace it, I don't see the need for the Garmin. I was hopeful that Navionics would upgrade to connect to auto pilots, but with Garmin running the shop that probably wont happen.

So far we have reached Morehead City NC with our 2 i pads and have found the dock to dock app to be wonderful. Some of the depths are off, but with the storms this year that is expected.

Thanks , again, for the input.

Is it possible to change your handle here or do you need to start over???

Navionics makes hardware better by supplying software. Raymarine, simrad and others use the software in their units and the navionics apps are less robust versions as the plotter versions.

I'm sure the iPad is not as hardened as the MFD. It's not waterproof, shock proof or marinized for long term exposure to the marine elements.

When the shit hits the fan you want the real stuff. You want a strong RADAR with reliable connections and a sounder that won't drop out when you need it.

And for the motoryacht crowd that rarely leaves the dock and won't recognize the value of true marine electronics I just brought full HD video into a garmin display and watched it on all the others on the network. It's like a floating sports bar with the game on every screen.

I've got an old Robertson pump if you need one. My friend John/Scarlett has the electronic portion of the Robertson autopilot if you need that as well.

Ron, how are you liking the slip charges up there. Less than SD aren’t they. I liked that Harbor when we were there many years ago, nice to be closer to the boat. John

The charges are nice but the marinas just arent as nice as most of the ones in San Diego. They are all original from the 60s. Price is right though, got an extra long 100 foot slip for $1700. They are trying to find me a smaller slip. Come visit sometime!

Ron,

Thanks, but I taking the Robertson out an installing a new system. Just have not decided what brand to go with.

Jim,

Im in Daytona today or tomorrow if you want to go over the options. I think your boat is 24 volt but if its 32 theres options too.

I downloaded active captain tuesday and found its not operational yet. Its probably a week or two until the server is functional I'm told. But it looks like it will be a great upgrade.

And it's free.

I hate that garmin corporate greed.
