  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Going to be in New Bern Friday about 3 pm for the weekend.

Need suggestions on must see stuff. We are traveling by ground.

Neither Becky or has has ever been there (except Kill Devil Hill). I am a pilot after all!!!!!:cool:
 
Newbern is a great little town. The Tryon Palace is a good stop. NB is also the birthplace of Pepsi. You can even tour the hatteras plant, I hear. Manteo is cool with the replica of a mayflower kinda wooden ship. Most of these places are better in the summer. The lost colony runs plays in the summer I think. Inland, near Asheville is the Biltmore estate. Lots to do for three days.
 
New Bern is quaint, nice place to stroll around. The old hardware store is interesting, Sheraton/Ramada or whatever the marina is now is nice to see. Several good restaurants downtown, but good ole eastern NC style bbq is the best thing you can get there. Moore's, out past Walmart, is the long time local place. Prob worth a trip (everything can be found best by knowing its proximity to Walmart.)

If you have time, Morehead is 30 mins east, and then over to Beaufort ("bowfort") one of the most beautiful spots on earth, IMHO. Another nice town to stroll if it's warm, and Beaufort Grocery is great meal. Sanitary Fish Market on Morehead Waterfront is looong time staple for local seafood. Highly recommend it.

geesh, now I'm hungry and stuck in Florida where they don't know how to cook seafood right. FRY IT dammit!
 
Moores bbq is closed, couple of great restaurants downtown.. Morgan's or 247 Craven on Craven st. and The Chelsea on middle st. are all very good. Breakfast at Bakers kitchen on middle st. is always a winner. Tryon Palace is an easy stroll from downtown and very interesting, everyone loves Mitchell's hardware. Tour historic Christ Episcopal church in the middle of downtown. Nice town to live in, Enjoy your stay!
 
We live in New Bern right on the river on the south side.
Yes, a whole weekend could easily be spent just enjoying this charming town. There are several good restaurants, more than a "couple"
Persimmons's is the most scenic, on the water and good food, and in the pretty historic district.
Morgan's is a an excellent value and consistent.
Good Indian food served buffet style at the Bay Leaf.
Good basic seafood in a more casual setting at the Sting Ray, right across from the excellent NC historical museum and Tryon Palace.
Agree with 237 and the Chelsea as well.

The big hotel on the water is now a Doubletree (formerly Sheraton and Hilton). The Marriott Courtyard on the water is very nice and has a nicer view. he water

Hatteras used to have factory tours on Thursdays, it would be worth calling them and seeing what might be arranged, as you are a Hatt owner and could be interested in a new one..

Beaufort/Morehead (where we used to live on our boat)_are a lot of fun, but that's worth a weekend on its own.



I disagree big time with Kings'; McClains in Goldsboro is far superior and great variety
. Wilber's is my second choice for the pork only; their chicken is weird.

BQ is like women every ones taste is not the same. It all taste like cardboard till you pore on the sauce.
Nothing like a escort by a local!

If you go near it, Elizabeth City is also a nice stop and a long time favorite of cruisers. I especially enjoyed the museum there which has a wonderful history of the area.

We lived in Fairfield Harbour for 2 years. Mitchell's Hardware is incredible! It is a step back into the 40's with some of the most unique products that you could ever find. The staff is super friendly. If you are into Sushi, Harris Teeters has the best we ever had from a supermarket.

Pour on the sauce? That's blasphemy! If it's done right, you don't need no more sauce! Wilbur's was okay, but I've had better Carolina 'cue. Met the owner of King's when I was taking the ferry across to Ocracoke last summer. Figure I'll try his place out next time I'm down that way.

The best q don't need no sauce; there's places in Texas where it is considered heresy to use sauce and they'll run any Yankee's ass out the door if he asks for it and no matter where you are actually from it automatically makes you a Yankee..

Actually IMO the best Q in the Goldsboro metro is out at Grady's west of there in the sticks. Now that's some eatin' right there.

Getting back to new Bern BTW, Persimmon's used to have and may still a killer brisket sandwich; they tested it out on me before they opened while we were living aboard at The Galley Store for a few months, as I lived in Texas a long time.

And I should add I have eaten at Kings and Wilbers many times I always believe in given someone a second or third chance if need be.

I should also say some of the best I have had anywhere was brought to my boat by Brenda and ol'whatisname for the pre-class party before one of the Hatteras University's Roger used to put on at Jarrett Bay. Many esteemed members here were in attendance.
