Thanks for the heads up on Moe's in Asheville as I have to make a run over there next week. I've never found any REAL Carolina cue west of Greensboro. We may need to do a background check on Tim having made that sauce comment.Just go over to Trenton, about 20 miles S.W. of New Bern and stand by my grandfather's grave. You will still smell some of the best eastern NC bbq God every blessed us with on this earth. He cooked his own for about 90 years, learning from his own father up near Greenville.
And I suggest you use the term "sauce" carefully down east. Yea, it is a "kind" of sauce, but easterners will take offense at the term easily because it's not mustard, ketchup, or any other that other stuff others rely on. We don't need it. Fighting words!
But I have to admit .. the Alabama/Colorado chain Moe's BBQ has the about best damn bbq I've ever had, including my grandfather's. It hurts, but true. They now have one in Wilmington, one in Murrells' Inlet, and 2 places in Asheville that I know of. Incredible que and sides to boot. If you haven't tried it, do so.

Lexington (about an hour west) is the birthplace of western NC BBQ, and is a source of great debate among those that savor the hog. Downeast is whole hog with a vinegar/pepper sauce, while Lexington style is shoulders with a vinegar/pepper/tad-of-ketchup to turn the sauce reddish. Most joints have converted to gas, but a huge thumbs up to Wilber's since they still use wood. Grab a couple of sandwiches and some sweet tea from the take out line and thank me later!![]()
I'm still allowed in Biltmore Village... well, maybe not in that fancy McDonald's with the fancy piano. How was I to know I wasn't supposed to play Skynyrd on that thing?FreeBird -
Yes, I was shocked when friends took me there after I resisted mightily. Moe's is closest to ENC bbq I've found outside of ENC. But then maybe I've just been away too long so hang me if I have violated my roots.
Nice one right down in B'more Village, unless you are banned from that area ...Other one is up north side in good ole redneck land. (Where you ain't a real woman unless you're driving a dually.)
Try it and let us know. Better yet, my sister and family can meet you there and get your opinion first hand, just buy em dinner.
btw, I live in Winston-Salem, near Lexington, NC p/t now. Don't even get me started on that mess ... ketchup is for fries only! A neighbor was one time national champion bbq cooker or something like that. Let me know next time you are near Greensboro and you can tell me about Moe's over a hushpuppy.
