There seems to be consensus that the 71 series are pretty stout engines. the 6-71 and 8V71 more so than the Turbos as those tend to have a limited life and is not cheap to replace, not to mention the fact that a failure may do more damage to the engine.

I have heard less enthusiasm for the 92 series engine, 6-8-12V92....

Anyone enlighten me?

Thanks.

I would take a 92 over a 71 in most cases. The 92's are much easier to rebuild too.
You got bad advice at the other place!! A lot of engines used wet liners. The 53's are wet, A number of the Cummins are wet including the C series , Man and MTU etc.

More specifics? Easier to rebuild?

With dry liners you have to fit the liners and it is a bitch of a job. can take a few days. Then after the std liners #1,2,3,4,5 then the block will need to be bored. The choice is bore to .010, .020, .030 then new block.

92 series you roll out the kits and drop in new cylinder kits.

This is simplified of course, but yo get the Idea.

here is a pic from when I rebuilt my 8V92

rolling out the kits.

almost ready

moment of truth!

Thanks! they look better now.

Very cool...... Somehow I suspect I will be doing something like that at some point.

So, apparently replacing liners is part of the kit. I assume pistons and rings too? Can you get to the bottom and undo the rods? I'm assuming the crankshaft stays in.... how often does THAT have to be redone?

Did you have heads redone by a machine shop, or did you get new/refurbished ones?

Trying to get my head around what a rebuild does and does not replace/refurbish.

On mine I replaced all the kits, new rods, heads done locally but with new valves, keepers and springs and tubes, new injectors, upgraded to o ring jumpers, went to spin on sec filter.
rebuilt blower, reman turbos, replaced the intercoolers, new harmonic balancer, new seals and replaced the cam bearing, rebuilt circ pump. new bearings, new regulator and relief valves, replaced the gaskets for the oil cooler [ was seeping], had manifold planed , replaced one sweep pipe, new t stats and seals. trans rebuilt, hoses were new a couple of years before. sent trans out for rebuild and replaced rear seal, hydreco pump resealed........

so no rattle can rebuild.

Seriously Its alot to do and some tasks more difficult than others. The higher the HP the more things need to be really right. Im sure the margin for error is small enough that one little problem can wreck and engine. Right Dave?

Yup, a bad injector can ruin 6 months!

this is my friends 45C. we did these engines in 2004. see any leeks?

Feel like taking a ride to sunny CT this winter?

That is too clean to soil by operating. Belongs in the Detroit Diesel Museum.

Too late now! just about 5 years ago. I still have the tip!!

Nice work! I'm redoing my 8v92s also but they don't look that good. Just had the turbos, govenors, intercoolers, oil coolers and all hoses redone. Question, what is the T-fitting on your raw water out line? Looks like it goes to a above the water line through hull just outboard of the turbo while my raw water out goes direct to the shower head. Otherwise they look like the same engines. And I've got an unused, plugged up through hull right about where your T is.

I'm going to out on a limb and say this is a colloquial expression......

The boat came with a 1 1/2 side discharges . They were supposed to be partially opened when trolling.
I leave them slightly open all the time. The nice thing is when partially open the raw water drains out. I used to clean the exchangers every 3 years. I am on 6 years without cleaning the exchangers.
