Looks just fine.

8 coats of clear on the blower. Just couldn't resist.

The boat came with a 1 1/2 side discharges . They were supposed to be partially opened when trolling.
I leave them slightly open all the time. The nice thing is when partially open the raw water drains out. I used to clean the exchangers every 3 years. I am on 6 years without cleaning the exchangers.

OK, stupid question from the newb time.....

Can you explain or point me to an explanation of the "side discharge" ? I'm assuming these are exhausts to use at idle to keep the noise/discharge/smell away from the stern when landing fish?

It is to lessen back pressure.

I assume it was because the 46C with 8V71TI had 8"exhaust and they still used the 8" with the.
8v92TI.

Clear is that because you used the white paint up on the Cables

;)

Acetone....

Fitting the liners in the 71 is a huge pita. I can see the 92's being a lot easier. Takes a lot of patience and perservearance to get the proper zip thunk sound and not say screw it good enough. Then all the honing grit needs to be washed out of the block or you'll be right back where you started from.

The cables came that way. PO customized them for me.

I pulled the FW pump and associated greening plumbing too. Repaired, rebuilt and repainted it. So far all is pretty. Ran about 50 hours since finishing that all in July. Ill have to see how well its holding up in pics.

OK, but then why are they supposed to be open during trolling? One would think back pressure is lowest during trolling......

Ah, there's more to it than just the raw water plumbing. Thanks for the info.

There were a lot of people with side exhaust 52's and 45's that added an additional exhaust discharge through the transom via tapping into the main tube where it bends to the hull side, think they were 4 inch holes. What they said was there was too much back pressure when the boats were squatting and also they didn't like the change in noise as the exhaust loaded and unloaded while under way. I prefer an old fashion straight out the back exhaust to know what's going on.

Most of the diesel boats back when I was a kid had side discharge cooling water and exhaust discharge never could understand why.
As far as underwater exhaust I'm not to crazy about it for a fishing boat putting fumes soot and oil into the bait spread not to mention the noise factor.

To avoid having extra holes in the transom many side exhaust boat have a little lip or glassed in jump/flare on the leading edge of the exhaust opening to help deflect the water out and around the opening. This is how our 45 is set up, it works, but probably noat as well as an additional hole in the transom.

From the Hatteras owners manual. I quote
" CAUTION"

" TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE EXHAUST BACK PRESSURE AND ENGINE OVER HEATING AT EXTENDED IDLE, THE EXHAUST RAW WATER BY PASS VALVE SHOULD BE NO LESS THAN 3 1/4 TURNS OPEN "

But back to the original question if I understood it correctly, 71's vs 92's. I was under the impression that 71's took less of a beating due to the smaller cylinder capacity and less HP, therefore less "wear" for lack of a better term, and therefore less of a chance of tearing them up and having to rebuild. Any truth to that? Or just a matter of personal preference. Or maybe it's more a matter of how they are operated and maintained?
