  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
For the first time ever we have received a NC county tax notice for personal property tax. We are not NC residents. Our boat is documented, however, and is moored there. The notice, which is addressed to us in TN, says they can find no record of out listing the boat for 2014 taxes. Didn't know we needed to. Can anyone enlighten me on why this is happening now?

Many thanks -
Paul

They want your money.

Yes. They started a few years back. If you are docked there, you must list and pay. Marinas report list of owners, etc. Generally favorable rates tho, better than some areas.

yep! Buy it, fuel it. pay insurance, get it worked on. and now its taxed what the heck is left...and now the state will not fix the inlets they say no money...Move it during the month of january. Thats reporting month....

If you're not a resident, how are they going to collect it if you just ignore it and don't pay?

Boat is protected by the local fire and police/sheriff. Local roads get you to the boat, and so on. Guess one's perspective depends on how much one feels entitled to freeload on those things. I owned rental property here for years when I was a Texas resident.. paid my taxes then, too.

By the way there's city tax too! And this past year they started requiring documented vessels to register.. oh, that's a fee, not a tax.. but it does help the cities and counties track you down.

Drop the document and just go with state registration.

Not going to argue with you but how many times have you see a police person go down the dock at Morehead city yacht basin.Security cam paid for by the marina. All the city police can do is write a ticket for 40 in a 35 down arendale street every day at least 10 to 20. Court cost 125.00 plus a fine for 5mph over stupid. Then Wheetley & wheetley gets it thrown out or prayer for judgement and have done it for years who looses?
I paid 200,000 for a condo 3 years ago just evaluated at 335 of course tax up. Now just how they going to value these old boats. Some book that was printed by far away company.. What business they have they are going to kill. For your children and mine they will not be able to a to enjoy the world as we know it now if they do not slow down.
So going along with every little increase just makes it harder and harder for our kids. The county and town moto throw money at it it will fix it. Two to five drops of fuel in the watter a 10,000 fine if i contest it. Loose dirt moves in a dranage ditch penalty 30.000 about 10 five gallon buckets full. The real world is the middle man.
Sorry George thats how i see it.
Enuff you just hit a soft spot with PERSONAL PROPERTY taxes. Somthing does not seem correct work to purchase work to keep it up work to just keep it never completely paid for. TAX IS A PENALTY FOR THE HARD WORKING.It takes all the desire out of working hard.
And to take tax dollar and loan it to a boat builder interest 1% for 10 years, When defalt or contract breached just extend it. . Thats how that county tax $ is handled. Say about 25 slips owned by the town I have never seen over three boats in them at one time. More tax $ used up and they want more. Shall i keep on......
From what i understand it is not the state it is the county and city looking the property tax$ but the state is asking us to registure the boat with a sticker in the windshied. Of course they will notify the county and city the boat is in. Then you are in the stream and here comes the tax bill. The same as the small boats buy a sticker from the state state tells city and county. Each year a new sticker and new bill......IF IT IS INCOME PRODUCING I COULD UNDERSTAND JUST PERSONAL PLEASURE HARD FOR ME TO SEE A TAX

Not sure it is the same in NC, but in Illinois, if you paid sales/use tax in another state, you would only be responsible for the difference in tax rate.

We purchased the 43C in Florida, and paid Florida sales tax. When we registered in Illinois, we only owed the difference between the tax rates. I think the Florida rate was 6% and the Illinois rate was 6.25%.

If the Florida rate had been higher, we wouldn't have had to pay anything in Illinois.

You mean they wouldn't refund you the difference? LOL

In Maryland, we pay sales tax when we buy the boat, and that's it. Virginia had, I think, a law like NC's, and repealed it when they realized people were moving boats out of state. I think it is ridiculous to tax a boat upon which tax has been paid elsewhere and I agree with Tim- states make targets of anyone they can in order to raise money for their expenses. One should not have to pay tax twice on the same thing.

He is talking about property tax, not sales tax. The rule was, 2 years ago, if you were docked in NC the first day of the first month (Jan 1st), the dockmaster would give the info to the tax commission. If you are passing through just mail it back and tell them that you are a snowbird. If you know your going to be there for a while, then you must let them know your there by listing it. I didnt list mine right away and had to pay a late fee even when I called and ask for instructions. I paid 3 different taxes all rolled into one. Brunswick County, Southport city, and Dosher hospital. If you stay in NC longer than 3 months (i think), you now need to register the boat just like in Florida. My homeport is still in NC so I pay taxes, but the state where we own a house, SC wanted in on the taxes too because of my land address. Our boat has never even been in SC when they came calling. I showed them where I paid in NC and they were satisfied. TEA, taxed enough already.

Then you got every gung ho state wildlife and fisheries man wanting to stop the boat just to look in. Or see the girls in swim suites. A big boat to them is a good catch.

at best it is a sack of siberian bull masquattie.....

Tim, we lived on our boat at Morehead City Yacht Basin for a couple of years, and then a year or so as remote owners when we moved into a land house in New Bern after 6 years of full time cruising and live aboard. We did have both fire and police presence there a few times, and it was just a 911 call away if needed. We spent a few months in New Bern as well and paid Craven and New Bern taxes (higher!) and also had police and fire services available and on site when needed.

You can bet any tax scoffer would be crying to high heaven if the fire department didn't come in case of a marina or boat fire. In the bigger scheme of things, the property taxes on boats are very nominal, in Morehead mine were about $500 each for city and county.

That's how it works in Virginia. If they see it in January, you'll get a notice, then a bill. Lots of boats move south in November because of it.

We pay property tax to the county/town where the boat resides, not the owners county of residence.

That's alot of rubbish! The marina your in pays property taxes and their built into your slip rent. So just like a home or other real estate owner your paying your fair share of the taxes for local and state services already.

I won't argue against the logic part of that but different states tax you for different things based on their tax plans. Although I agree it's a PITA to be taxed and taxed and taxed it's a part of boating in some places.

I do believe it was John Kerry that worked on a plan to not pay tax on the last vessel he bought. Maybe see how that's working out?

If the state has a tax for your boat to be there you should do your part for the economy and pay it.
