Is NC now taxing nonresident owners of documented vessels moored in NC?

They theoretically get the sales tax. Half the deals I've seen in the past few years had buyers looking to skirt paying the sales tax.

I'm sure the other brokers have seen similar bs.

I bought my boat through my Florida broker and I had to complete a sales tax affidavit as part of the sale and paid the FL tax. I then had to present that affidavit to my local FL tax office along with the notarized bill of sale & documentation to register my boat. Hard to get around that unless someone is producing a second set of documents. Then you have fraud.

The get a temporary sale tax deferment to allow them to take the boat to another state. Then you guessed it. They document and no sales tax.

A customer did this long ago. When he went to sell the boat he could not get title as someone turned him in. To bad for him he paid a pretty good sized penalty.

That's how it works in Virginia. If they see it in January, you'll get a notice, then a bill. Lots of boats move south in November because of it.

We pay property tax to the county/town where the boat resides, not the owners county of residence.

Virginia is a good state, but personal property tax is one of the most annoying things in it. However, the personal property tax is determined by the COUNTY. And, some counties don't tax Boats, RV's, Trailer (Prince William). Stafford County is next to Prince William and a couple years ago they finally eliminated personal property taxes on boats--because people would not keep boats at marinas in stafford due to the tax. The tax is about something like 3-5% of the value, yearly. Own a 300k, try paying 15k a year in taxes for the pleasure of owning it.

This company likely lobbied the county years and years ago....and it has been a great business for them: http://hollyacres.com/page.aspx/pageid/157636/page.aspx

Did you know? There is no personal property tax assessed on RV's, Boats and Trailers that are garaged in Prince William County. What this means for you is that regardless of where you live in the state of Virginia, if you garage your vehicle in Prince William County you pay no personal property tax. On average most counties taxes are two to three times higher than what you would pay in annual storage fees at Holly Acres. So essentially you would be getting your storage for free!! See the example below:

Surrounding counties on average assess a $4.57 property tax per $100.00 value of your RV. If you own a 40' RV valued at $200,000.00 your annual tax bill would be $9,140.00. If you stored your RV at Holly Acres your annual storage fee would be $1,440.00.
