48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
Hello all,

I've been diagnosed with lymphoma, the very treatable kind, and the Chemo 'cure' will run through most of the summer. My insurance requires me to be north of Cape Hatteras for the season, but I was able to negotiate a one time deal to leave it here in Florida in a hurricane resistant building rated for 140 mph winds. Pricey, but clean and air conditioned to 53% RH.

My question is what if anything should I add to the 500 gallons of diesel which will be in the tanks? I never collect any water in the separators. Anything else I'm forgetting? All my lay up experience is for cold winters. We will of course pump out the waste and fresh water tanks.

Good luck with your treatment!
I use bio bor but anything that will prevent algae will work. If your not going to be able to mix it in with a fill up I'd mix it in a5 gal can of fuel and dump it in.

Best of luck with your treatments - you'll be in our thoughts and prayers.

We will be thinking of you, and offering prayer, best of luck.

Hi All,

Bob, really sorry to hear this news My best wishes for a full recovery.

Bob, ........"the Chemo "cure", that's the spirit. Keep posting. I am always interested in what you have to say.

Bob get well soon.

For fuel I would add something to stabilize and maintain the freshness of the fuel. If you have no algae don't treat for it.
I've been checking out opti lube.

Scott, What is opti lube?

Get well soon, from all of us here. You will be back on the water in no time. If you want to look at a comparison for diesel treatments, Practical Sailor did a good one within the last year or so. I will see if I can find that issue and post their findings on this thread.

Sorry to hear the news Bob. Its just for the summer right? Thats only a few months. Heck, people keep their boats tied to docks for extended periods of time without even moving. Then they crank um right up and take off. So how long is too long to let it sit without running fresh diesel through the tanks? I know your not used to that kinda thing. I dont see 5-6 months being a real big deal.

Hang in there, Bob! I always consider you the go-to chemistry guy on the forum and appreciate your insights!

For layup, I just add some extra Diesel Kleen.

Sky the new ulsd sucks and when I got my new truck with the cummins 6.7 I started to really search for additives that didnt screw up the egr and dpf.

Roger found this stuff and when I look at the properties I saw a significant difference in lubricity and cetane. Diesel clean is not bad but I think the opti is better and costs about the same. The downside is I have to buy in advance as its not available everywhere. Thats ok since I can put 10 gallons in the garage and reorder as needed. FWIW the ford powerjoke 6.0 seems to do well with this stuff too. Not that I would own one but I know people who do.

Good luck Bob I am sure everything will work out , and remember always keep a positive attitude. I have used bio-bor for algae prevention and startron for stabilization

good luck bob, hope everything works out. get well soon

I can see how you might need it in the 6.0 or some of the other newer engines, but my 7.3 and my DD's run fine on ULSD with just the Diesel Kleen. I'm sure there are better additives out there, but based on availability and price, it's hard to beat DK.

I was talking to the DK rep last week and I wasn't too surprised that they are having their best year ever. The bitter cold has had them scrambling to keep up.

I like the added lubricity. Its something the detroits may benefit from. Considering they were designed when the fuel was also a lube.

I agree.

All ULSD is supposed to have lubricity additives to make it at least as good as the LSD but I don't necessarily trust them. That's the main reason I use the DK for the lubricity additives. Some think it's overkill, but I'd rather be safe than be replacing injectors and fuel pumps.

Especially since adding lubricity cost money. I don't think they add what they should.
