58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
We've decided to put Kismet on the market. After spending the last three years upgrading her to be exactly what I wanted....there's simply no time to enjoy her. I've always been a "work hard/play hard" person...and Kismet was intended to be the families "play hard" toy. Unfortunately, we just haven't used her nearly as much as possible. Too many other obligations and commitments find their way in. Generally speaking, life is just too busy. My kids range from 8 to 24 and you can imagine the diverse interests there! Everyone loves Kismet and is heartbroken about the decision, but 8 knots is only fast enough for me....at least for a while.

Over the last few months, I've also come to realize that my business is in a unique position to create some significant long term wealth for my children and theirs, along with some of my staff. But to do so requires more of the "work hard" philosophy - at least for the next cople of years. I've always subscribed to the fact that money isn't everything - but as the years roll on - the earning opportunities diminish as well.

So, the new plan is to stay focused on the business and retire in 5 years. Not to worry....I don't expect the boat to sell tomorrow and will continue to be around. We'll continue to cruise Kismet as often as possible and until the days she transfers to her 5th owner.

Sorry for the long winded diatribe. If you see her listed, it's true. And yes, I have already listed with a broker (and fellow Hatt owner). If you know anyone looking for the best LRC around, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the brokerage.

Hey, maybe in 5 years when you retire fuel will be $1.50-2.00 a gallon. Then you can go faster!
 
Jeff, I just reviewed the photos of Kismet in your listing and that boat is absolutely beautiful in every way. It's obvious that you have put a lot of time, money and love in bringing it to this level. A friend of mine owns the 58 LRC "Mariah" and it doesn't come close to yours even though he's still in the $400s and been on the market for a long time.

OUCH... know how much work and love you put into her... But you gotta do what you feel is best for you and your family. Someone is going to get a super boat...

I took the opposite approach... Watched too many of my friends die suddenly (including my very healthy, marathon running brother) and said, "screw it"... But then again, my "kids" are 38 and 42....
I can't afford anything but the 43' but we are full time liveaboards and I retired last year...

The only times we have owned a boat were right before we had kids and immediately after our youngest graduated from college. In the intervening 30 years, we rented and chartered, I couldn't make any sense of owning a boat for the reasons you've discovered.

Personally, I have never had any interest whatsoever in building any wealth for them; just to put them in a position to do it for themselves, or put more accurately, to be able to pursue whatever they wanted to accomplish in life on their own. My daughter is putting herself through law school and my son is building his own life with money he has earned himself. If I can time it right, I will die dead broke and the charities we support will get any remainders. The boat is always eager to help me in that goal, God bless her.

I have no regrets for owning Kismet. She's been a wonderful platform for fun, weekend getaways, corporate entertaining, waterfront condo, regional cruising and occasional fishing. Just haven't used her as much as we had hoped and I'd love for someone else to enjoy her as she was meant to be used (coastal/long range cruising/live aboard.

And given the state of the industry, we may own her for quite a while. In which case, we'll continue to use, love and care for her.
 
Jeff, we don't want you to worry. You just bring Kismet up here, and we will exercise her, make sure all the TVs are working, etc; and we might even wash her once in a while if we aren't too hung over. We'll take care of her for you. No sweat.

Wish I wasn't so far down the road on the refit of my 58 MY.

The boat looks absolutely beautiful.

I suspect that the hull of your boat is a different design from the standard 58' hull. Can you confirm this.

Also, I am pleased to see that Eric is representing your yacht. I knows these boats and has an excellent reputation in the yachting community.

The 58 MY hull of this vintage is a modified V that has a beam of 15' 10" a draft of 4' 9" and a displacement of 62,500#. The 58 LRC has a beam of 17' 11" a draft of 5' 10" and a displacement of 90,000#. Two very different hulls.
 
Well, I hope whoever buys her is or becomes a member of this online community. She is a peach, no two ways about it.
 
Well, Kismet went under contract today. Much faster than I honestly expected (Thanks Eric!) and we anticipate a smooth survey and closing. We had figured this would take much longer and had already started some cruising plans in the northern bay area. While we're really sad to see her go, the potential quick sale was obviously in the cards and tough to pass up. My 9 year old daughter is heart broken and fell asleep crying tonight, which didn't help matters though.

Guess the search for Kismet II begins sooner than I thought! What will she be? Who knows. Probably smaller, much faster, much more of a fuel hog, fewer creature comforts, more fishability, still offshore capable, over nightable.....

I'll keep everyone posted!

But good luck with your search new chapter on its way hopefully soon so your daughter heals quicker ;)

Just shows you how much the Kids can be attached to the boat. When my Dad sold his I was 14 had my own and worked for the ferry company and he still asked if I was good with it :cool:
