  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Saraswati is getting hauled out soon for a complete bottom job including zincs. What sizes do I need, how many of each, and where the best place to get them? I want good quality and pricing and don't trust the yard to get what's best or get it from a place with decent pricing.

Steve will have them at Sams Marine it will take two for each shaft two for the rudders and two for the trim tabs. he will have sizes

Thanks, but I'd like to do some shopping around to compare quality and pricing. Anyone know the sizes?

If you want to compare without knowing the sizes..just pick 2 1/4 shaft zincs and R5 rudder zincs and you will be close and will good for comparison shopping..use quantity of 4 of each

Excellent. Thanks!

Why support the forum host if you can get the information from him and buy it elsewhere. If you go online you can always beat a local or value added resellers price. Now if we asked your boss if he could outsource your job to India would that be OK too?

We use R4s on the rudders and 4 2" zimar zincs on the shafts. I buy from WM using port supply and is 1/3 of the yard pricing. Always keep 1 set on the boat to avoid an overprice situation from a diver. We are in the yard now getting loved on. Great service from Bennett Brothers in NC. First time using a yard up here. A big upgrade from our last yard experience in GA. Pricing is comparable or better without the change orders.

I'd LOVE to buy from him as long as the prices and quality are competitive with what else is in the market. Doesn't have the be the BEST price, just competitive. But to simply use a specific vendor because they host a forum would be a less than intelligent buying decision.

I was going to ask if anyone had used PS (I'm a member, well the wife is, she runs the marketing/communications department at ABYC).

2- 3" zincs on the trim tabs.

Same style as the ones for the rudder? It's been a couple of years since I ordered my own and can't remember (had diver supply/change them last year).

Anyone ever seen an angled or wedge shaped zinc for the bottom of the rudder? One that would help deflect a little water down and maybe help pop the aft up a little?

So will you hold the discount sellers to the same standard of support and providing information as Sams or do you take that for granted as long as you save a buck?

The time you waste shopping is probably not worth the savings but then again I can see your next boat having sails

I can see where your boat got it's name. This is not unusual...people call around for pricing and availability all the time. Hell, I didn't even call and try to get the info from one of their paid employees...I asked the community... It's not about being cheap, it's about being smart. If you have 10 boat bucks to spend and spend wisely, you can accomplish more. I'm not rich and do have to watch my budget. If you are lucky enough to not have to worry about paying too much for the same product, good for you.

Frankly, it never occurred to me to buy zincs from Sam's, who is my default supplier for so many things. I think it is important to support them as much as you can because we need them to be there for us when nobody else has any idea how to get the right part (let alone know what the right part is). They provide this forum for free too, yet have been very gracious about allowing commercial links, a no no on some other forums sponsored by boat parts vendors. I consistently point to Sam's as one of the key reasons to buy a vintage Hatteras vs almost any other brand out there. It's always somewhat amusing to see owners of other brands asking around desperately about how to replace some doohickey or another.

I value my time and am willing to save time by using value added suppliers. If I spend an hour on line to save $25 I'm down at least a $50 bill in lost productivity. If your time has no value shop until you drop. remember the value you get from a discounter when it comes to support.

By the way iof you want to ask technical question on engine items on a site with no comercial sponser go on Boatdiesel.

Of course I think that will never happen as you have to pay to join and when cost is the only consideration for you I hope you get what you pay for.

Oh good grief. Please reread what I said with some actual thought. I said Sams didn't have to be the cheapest, so price is not the only consideration. I said I wanted to shop around a bit. no need for the nasty attitude. I have bought LOTS of parts from Sams and greatly appreciate all they have done for me. And I definitely take the cost of my time into consideration, but I don't make $75 per hour (your figure, $25 savings and you are still down $50, so you must earn at least $75 per hour) and the savings on zincs from being a Port Supply member is substantial. If I only choose based on service, I'd simply pay the local Hatteras dealer to do all my work with an open checkbook...which would be foolish even if I could afford it, which I can't. I'm happy you are financially successful enough to not worry about costs...I am not, likely never will be. I'm just a mid-level governmental employee who loves his Hatteras and needs to be careful with budgeting to ensure she is well cared for while leaving enough every month to take care of other obligations like my new-to-me step-daughter. If I save $50 on zincs, that $50 more to spend on her or another boat project.

Just to compare West Marine prices to Port Supply on zincs:

Shaft
Westmarine $24.99
PS $17.34

Rudder:
West Marine $26.99
PS $18.45

Tabs
West $19.49
PS $11.89

As you can see, considering that multiples are needed of each, the savings is a pretty high percentage. PLUS they deliver for FREE...I doubt Sams does that for heavy zincs.

If you have a PS account why call WM, WM owns PS ???

I didn't call anyone. I do it all online. I just wanted to see what the cost difference was. On some items the PS discount is next to nothing, for others it is substantial.

Where is the port supply forum? Did you get good answers there?

Did you even ask Sams for the cost?
