I have been through there many times and never seen it like that. Yikes
 
Wow, been thru there a few times when calm. I have always thought those shallow inlets along West Florida could get really bad.
 
Use to surf the North side (back in the day) and watched commercial boats that were caught outsidecome in. Always a sight to behold.
 
Man, does that bring back memories! I lived in Venice for part of 1987 most of 1988 and lived on the island. I don't remember which hurricane it was that passed through the keys, but I headed out of the inlet in my 22' Stingray go-fast just to see what things looked like.

The inlet itself wasn't all that bad, but the waves that were headed north were mountainous! For whatever reason, it seemed like it would be fun to get out there and ride those puppies! I was the only boat out that day and was having LOTS of yeehaw moments... until it came time to go back inside. Venice is one of the deeper inlets on the west coast, but those north of it... not so much. The plan was to surf those big boys north and come back to Venice via the ICW, but I didn't take into consideration how shallow the north passes were. Big Sarasota Pass made that video look like calm seas. I kid you not, it was a mess!

I could see that would be an exercise in futility, so I headed to New Pass. Unfortunately, it wasn't much better, but I was out of options and knew Tampa Bay would be the only viable option past that. Heading into those seas and going back to Venice was NOT an option. I rode the backs of those big waves until they crashed, then I hit the throttle on the 350 Magnum MerCruiser (thank God for acceleration) and shot to the side before the next set overtook me. Then I would ride the back on the next set and repeat. I made it back inside, but that was one hell of a ride. Reminded me of surfing barge propwash wakes on the river in my 7' hydroplane when I was a kid.

Randy, I'll bet those blue hairs sitting in their condos along New Pass, seeing that little rocket coming in from offshore, grey skies, huge waves, thought, "there is one crazy SOB".
 
Either that or they were saying, "bless his heart", which in this case would have pretty much meant the same thing! LOL
 
Memories!!!!! A classmate's father who was manager of Mercury's test center near Turtle Beach/Midnight Pass (long closed) would let us take out test boats late afternoon, early evening after school. The prized ride was the "Power Cat" with twins --- remember the Mark 75? tearing thru Sarasota Bays, out New Pass, Big Pass, Midnight Pass and Venice Jetties. The rougher the better as being airborne was the thrill. Need to mention that this activity was in the early 60's before the huge population growth spurt and how we got away without being severely injured, killed or killing someone else is beyond me.

Sure was fun when young but....... Randy now you know why I travel south in settled weather/seas. BTW fishing was good June moon and very good on the way back mid July. Should have won the tournament but went 1-4 and only cashed in on a daily.
 
We went out in conditions like that, with our 42 LRC and our friends 48 LRC. We made it but I told my wife the good news is we made it out, the bad news is I ain't going back. We made Shark River Everglades but it was sporty.

But did you have a good time? Hell, you needed to let somebody else win this one anyway to stay in good standing with the locals. :D

Definitely remember the Mark 75's, and I cut my adult teeth on a tower of power 1000 on a 16' runabout. Funny thing though, I was running my Allison yesterday evening, and as the GPS approached the 80MPH mark, I thought of how dumb I would feel to part ways with the boat when I had a 100 MPH impact vest in the mail. It was pretty choppy yesterday, and I had her on her tail. Talk about the ultimate irony and one final "good" story, but it did show up today. Maybe my sense of self-preservation is finally catching up with my sense of adventure. :D
 
That's a tough one .... Very tough one! Self-preservation vs Adventure? Always have had that wonderment of Adventure .... at my age, still physically able to go for it.....to give it up? ........ Naw, not yet.

I'll get 90 out of that boat eventually, but if the boat and I were to part company, I wanna live to tell about it.

I'm still looking for that Lauderdale to Ketchikan delivery myself... maybe on just the starboard engine.

If you head the other way you can run on just a port engine.

Just trying to get the Nascar out of the redneck.
 
My mom used to say "little pitchers have big ears" be careful you don't turn Ryan into a maniac too. Emulating the old man before he learns ,that stove is going to burn ya, would not be good! Just sayin!
 
Watching this video reminded me of the one where the guy gets thrown off the boat coming into Stuart and how fast that happened

I think so. Waterdog was the boat IIRC.
