If you were to buy a mid 1980's motor yacht with the ash/white interior ,how much trouble/cost to change the salon / pilot house back to a teak interior ? Could you just use veneer or would new panels, walls be needed ? Thanks

Huge job but I understand. I hate the lighter looking woods. Might be easier and cheaper to strip the finish and stain than veneer.

Thanks ! I never thought of that option .

I have looked at a few convertibles with the light interior and didn't mind it, it does not photograph well however and always looks pink in the listings. It helps to open up the feel.

. Maybe add some trim in teak wood , to break up the light wood ?

Aside from trim work, all flat panels are veneer plywood. Although the veneer isn't micro thin like todays offerings, it's still quite thin and even moderate sanding can expose the plywood surface under the veneer. Stripping the existing finish is best accomplished via chemicals such as paint stripper or acetone with steel wool to work the surface, and avoiding sanding until you get a couple coats of new varnish applied.

If you'll be buying teak, buy it now. As of August the United States Dept. of State has aggressively deepened sanctions on Burma/myanmar which is where virtually all real teak comes from. Its existing stocks of teak only in the USA from now until who knows when, no more on the way.

IMHO, if that's what you want to do, is to use a tinted polyurethane.. and just lightly scuff the surface with 320, and spray with polyshades or equivalent.

WalterP did this years ago on a 48MY as I recall. Send him a PM. He doesn't post here much anymore but I think he checks in from time to time.

Yes Sky, I do still "lurk" on this site. I gave up boating about 5 or 6 years ago when I passed 80 and I
couldn't do very much on the boat anymore. Getting a part time captain to take care of it proved impossible
and even kneeling down to secure lines became a chore. But I digress.... Over the last 50 plus years I
have owned 4 Hatteras'. The first 3 all had beautiful wood interiors. I needed a 3rd stateroom for my
granddaughters as they spent a good bit of every summer in NJ and we stayed on the boat mostly.. I sold
my last 43 DC and bought a 1982 Motor Yacht. Needed way too much work but I figured I can do anything
given enough time. One of the previous owners in his infinite wisdom (lack of) decided to have the entire
boat Awlgripped....including the interior... Outstanding paint job but between the white bulkheads and the
mirrors everywhere, it looked like a New Orleans house of ill repute. I thought it would not be a big deal to remove the paint and mirrors. After I did a
little, it became evident that I would never get it back to original looking wood do I decided to bite the
bullet and I gutted the entire interior down to the fiberglass interior of the hull. Bought a bunch of 1/2"
Afromosia plywood and some matching veneer and went to work. Took the best of about a year but it
came out very well. I must caution that this is not a project for the faint of heart or a tight budget. Being
retired and woodworking a major hobby (I have a complete wood shop with all professional quality machines)
It worked for me. I still have some large 2 1/2" by 12 inch boards left over in my wood rack that was used
for all the solid teak parts and new cabinets. I am going on 87 now so I am limited with what I can do
but I would love to help out in your project in any way I can, depending on where you are located. I am
in Central Jersey (near exit 8A)of the Tpke. Please call me if you like and we can talk about your potential
project.... WalterP 732-991-5665

Now that is a generous offer. This is a great community.
