Our 48 LRC had three major winter projects that I just reported on to the LRC Club list. Thought that perhaps some non LRC Hatteras owners may also find the info interesting, so below is the text of the list post.
"When I last reported Blue Chip was in the Yard, actually at the dock behind our house, for numerous improvements over the winter. The three major items were new exhaust system for quieter operation, a new Steelhead four function hydraulic crane, and reverse cycle AC for the engine room. I did all the installations myself. Blue Chip just moved from New Bern to Norfolk to begin our Chesapeake adventures for the summer.
Bottom line, all three projects turned out better than even I expected. By my measure, the AC in the engine room wins hands down as the best of the three. You just have not treated yourself to what life has to offer us self maintaining boat owners, until you experience this. It actually makes being in the engine room enjoyable this time of year, versus the sweaty experience I have grown accustomed to. Installed a Mermaid 18,000 BTU unit, and integrated it with the Cruisair pump and pump controls, so all AC units on the boat get sea water whenever any are running. Hung the unit from the overhead on the engine room starboard aft corner. No new thru hulls were required. Second, I installed a Steelhead Marine ES1000 four function crane. All hydraulic with pump in the engine room. Mounted it in the same position a the former Pipewelders original equipment. Definitely worth a good look if you get into crane investigation. Also seeing them on new Hatteras, but I think the factory offers multiple choices. This one is built like a Hatteras, as in overkill on all components. Probably equally important, my hydraulic pump had a seal leak. FedEx delivery of a complete new unit, overnight, Saturday delivery, shipped the afternoon of the day I called. Third project was a new exhaust system for less sound. Installed two Vernatone double water lift MKII horizontal mufflers, and Vetus agitators to remix the water and gases after the mufflers. All new pipe and blue silicone hose between the exhaust riser and the aft bulkhead water tight fitting. Bottom line, the propeller wash splashing is the only sound you hear in the cockpit while underway. Temperature readings at each of the head to manifold exhaust joints remain the same. What a difference, and the Detroit sound is still there.
Work is over, time to enjoy until I think up another project ! ! !"
