  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Do you guys with either 53 , 56 or 58 Motor Yachts that have framed aft deck side windows have glass or plexiglass in them? If you have glass is it 1/4 inch laminated or something else. I now have plexiglass but would rather have real glass if it would work, but not sure if those panels are to big for real glass.

The boats that I have been involved with had glass. I'm sure its something laminated.

On my 1965 50 motoryacht, all the glass - from portholes to the gigantic helm windows to the salon sliding windows - are 1/4" safety glass (consists of 1/8" glass pane, safety lamination, 1/8" glass). mostly original, several have cracks on one side but not the other side, the lamination helped prevent both sides cracking.
Mine also have the aqua colored tint, big help with sun/heat! Any professional glass shop will be able to fabricate them for you. make sure they bevel all the edges or it will chip and/or crack with movement. If they say they can't bevel them, find another shop that can!
Dig deeper into searching this forum and you will find lots of info about removal and installation.
Hope this helps.

John,

I have had good luck with custom glass from www.onedayglass.com in the Pacific Northwest, although since shipping is free it really does not matter where you are.

Using the online configurator is an education in itself and helps inform where the various costs incur.

Depending upon your year, reportedly the standard Hatteras slight green color was called "Solex".

It is easy to make up a tempered, laminated, Solex panel of 1/4" or more. I have used them for several projects and the quality is excellent.

(FYI: don't assume the glass on your boat is the same from side-to-side. I had a neighbor make that expensive mistake by only measuring one side and ordering doubles...)
(FYI2: my boat spent time in Cabo San Lucas and had multiple panes crack presumably because heat from the intense sunlight was trapped by an inside tint job; I will order OEM Solex and use exterior fabric screens for darkening.)
