  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
My '86 52C had the original mauve and white pinch pleat curtains. They covered all the way to the windshield. I am not completely satisfied with the original look for the forward section and looking for options. I have already made the rear curtains and recovered all the cornice but want to see what other folks have for their forward sections. Soooo, what have you?

This is the best original pic I have.

Pics are off phone so, again, they are not very good.

hey ..why don't you go for Overhead Hatch Blinds..or may be specialty shape blinds? They will look good. Here is a look on how the blinds would look.

Here is what I did on my 42 Post. Tight curtains across the windshields with rods top and bottom, upholstered boards made of Starboard "light" forward and aft with wood blinds, and roll up fabric soft shades (not very visible in photos) across the aft bulkhead.

Eric,
Every picture of every boat you've owned, just looks classy. I loved that aft deck on the Mathews and this Post looks great as well. Nice job.

" I loved that aft deck on the Mathews "

I was really annoyed that Eric sold the boat before I could sneak over and steal the really cool chairs off the back deck! :(

On mine, I eliminated the blinds on the inside of the forward windows. I then had the exterior windshield cover expanded to wrap around and cover the forward side windows as well. It looks good from inside and outside. Sorry, I don't have a picture.

Thanks Sky. In a very long ago previous life before I was a yacht broker, I was involved in the interior design industry. At that time I was surrounded by some very creative and talented people. I guess I paid attention.

One of these days I'll post the before and after on my current boat. BTW, That Post was almost in salvage condition when I bought her.

Here is a picture of how we did the windows on Chateau de Mer. Large miniblinds on both sides accented with pleated drape panels. Pleated drapes across the windshield. The corner wedges were also done with pleated panels. They look more finished than flat fabric triangles. Sorry the view is not ideal... this was taken to document interior condidion prior to Irene.199.webp

Thanks. We had blinds in our 60 and I hated them. We even strung them on fixed wire to limit the movement. I ended up fitting R-Max in the 5 forward window frames and that will be covered with the accent material. A couple micro-preemies have brought my boat time to a halt but I will post a pic when things settle down.

You know what gets me about most boaters? They spend all this $$$ to buy a boat pay big bux to get away and be in a boating environment, then they close all the blinds and curtains and live in a cave. Personaly when I'm on the boat I want to see out and enjoy the scenery.

You said it. And look at all of the popular express boats with no portlights. It truly is like living in an air conditioned cave.

To each his own. We are on the boat 24/7 for six months at a time as our home. In marinas the view is another boat. When under way, we are on the bridge and at anchor on the aft deck which is where we spend a lot of time when in a marina. The blinds make it light w/o direct sun to fade the fabrics. We like it.

As someone who lives aboard in South Florida year round, I can tell you that my drapes in the salon are priceless in the summer. Without them closed during the daytime hours, the AC just cannot overcome the greenhouse effect the sun creates inside - understand my entire salon and aft deck is nothing but windows all the way around. That is also the reason I keep the cover on the windshield during the summer. Winter - that's a whole other story! I love all the openness. Point is - sometimes curtains, shades, blinds, etc. serve a very valuable purpose other than aesthetics. For those who boat up north, you probably don't see it the same way we do down here.

My mother does my custom drapery on my boats. On Bay Mariner, she took a measurement for those corners near the windshields and made flat pieces and lined them just like the other salon curtains, similar to what Eric had (nice looking boat, by the way Eric!) and we fastened them to the aluminum frames using velcro. I had one or two of the velcro pieces come undone with winter condensation and when that happened I re-fastened with a hot glue gun. Note that we also used the hot glue gun to fasten the velcro to the fabric, which was much easier than sewing it in, then I could also place it exactly where I needed it on-site.

This is our recently sold 36C. The curtains fasten at the top and the bottom. The normal curtain rods weren't strong enough, so we replaced with copper tubing across the top and bottom. The curtains on each window will separate in the middle and pull back.
