Our newly acquired 53ED has a well rebuilt Galley Maid. I looked through the paperwork left on the boat and could not find the windlass capacity in pounds or such. I was planning on purchasing a Mantus Marine anchor.. 125# or 155#.. Cruising area would be the Bahamas, ICW & Keys. The question is, with let’s say 150ft of 5/16” chain paid out at approx 1lbs/foot. Total weight would be 275 or 305 pounds. Ideally the windlass would need to have a 1200-1500# capacity, in case more chain gets paid out.Another anchor that we used in the past is the Spade 122lbs with a 3000# Maxwell windlass. It was great. My impression is that the Galley Made has at least 1000# or a bit more. But I have no real data.Would you all be so kind as to share the anchor weight that you have had success with. Thank youStreff

I have a Galley Maid windlass, I have a Mantus 125# anchor with 200' of 3/8" G4 chain (Grade 43).
You have to make sure that the windlass gypsy profile matches the type and size/grade of the chain that you select. Galley Maid can help you with this.
I have had great success with the Mantus Anchor. I have used it in rivers, the West Coast of Florida, the Bahamas, and the Keys.

I believe the big Galley Maid windlass is 1200lbs pull and the small one is 600lbs...

I was going to link you to their manual on their website but their website doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Found this from when I scanned my manual.

I once saw a 53ED with a Galleymaid windlass where the owner installed 1/2 chain and a huge storm anchor for use in his hurricane hole. It may have been over the rated capacity, IDK, but GM sold him the wildcat for it.

The real weight it will lift is about equal to the depth x # per foot + anchor weight. You should be straight over it to break loose and lift. All the other chain is pulled in as you bump up to the anchor.

Thank you all very much. I believe that I have the big Galley Made. The Gypsy has BBB stamped on it. The chain on the boat is 5/16”. Thank you for the GM specs. It sounds like if I keep the total weight under 350#, either big or small GM would be fine. if we consider the deadlift (not total chain paid out), then it’s unlikely that I will go other 350#.

2 years ago we cruised to Alaska and some anchorages were 85-95 feet deep. In anticipation, I had upgraded the windlass motor.

A marina neighbor has a 105# Mantus for sale (never used) but I think I would prefer a heavier anchor. I am a bit conservative on that. I suspect the 105# will be handled without issues by the GM. I also always use a bridle which helps some in high winds. Maybe upgrading the chain to High test & bridle.., the 105# anchor would be just fine.

thank you all again

Streff, I have the original GalleyMaid anchor windlass manual from Pau Hana as a PDF download. If you want I will email it to you, my email rwaldrop13@gmail.com if you want.

Call Galley Maid while you are in front of your windlass. Ask to speak to Rick. He will ask you a few questions to help him identify which one you have. Then listen carefully and he will tell you more about the windlass than you want to know. He is probably the person that installed it originally
