Oh man, why did I fall in love with Hatteras? Yes, her lines are pretty and she has a solid build, BUT, she is very expensive and is high maintenance.
Reminds me of my past wives. ;)

"she is very expensive and is high maintenance." I understand the wife comparison, but as far as boats go, compared to what?

Actually they are less expensive to maintain than lesser vessels because they are built so well the need less but when they need it is usually a top line item that will be more durable and more expensive.

I like to keep out of the ex wife thing since I don't have any.

You mean there are high quality but cheap, low-maintenance yachts available? Where? WHERE? :D

Lol...ok...sorry, don't take me too literally, it could be taken rather flattering to the boat and my past loves ya know.
But, in my research over the past 10 yrs or so, looking at various mfg's and styles, developing my taste and appreciating a classic style, the Hatteras wins heads up! Compared to others price wise they are still in the highest resale range compared to any others. Don't ask which others, it doesn't matter, because I am totally focused on a Hatteras recgonizing it's quality and retaining values.
Put another way, I have champagne tastes on a beer budget...lol...there, that's a better analogy.

An old Hatt is cheaper to own than most other used boats. They break less and when the time comes to sell, you still get a good chunk of your money back. Spend $300K on a five year old Silverton and $300K on a 15 year old Hatt. Wait another ten years and the Silverton will be worth next to nothing while the Hatt will still have a market. Look around and see how many 30 year old Sea Rays, Carvers, Silvertons etc. you find. Look at all the old Hatts that are still in service and going strong.

A few years back, there was a 46' Ocean next to my 46' Hatt. Both boats were out of the water for winter storage.Topsides of the Ocean were a bit bigger. Bow on the Hatt was bigger, Hatt was huge below the water line compared to the Ocean. Running gear on the Hatt was 3 times that of the Ocean. That Ocean is 14 years younger than my Hatt and has needed tons more major repairs. I'm sure my Hatt cost less to own then that boat.

Have you ever heard someone say look at that classic Owens? Classic Searay? Classic Wellcraft? Classic Tiara?

I didn't think so.

There is an Ocean 53MY at my marina. We both hauled for bottom paint the same weekend. This baot is close to 10 years newer than my Hatt...and looks like it is 20 years older...at least. Her hull looks tired, and she looks outdated on the exterior. Sure, her cabin sides look MASSIVE by comparisobn...she shure looks bigger than 53...and I've hear she has a huge salon & interior...but I've also heard the interior is VERY outdated, not at all a "classic" interior like we have. She's for sale now, no clue on price o if she's on YW yet...but I'd much rather have my Hatt than any Ocean...

I have a 1973 53MY with the original paint on the hull and she still looks better than many of the 90's and newer boats in the marina. Her interior is classic and while not slick like searays etc. , she still looks great and has a warm comfortable feel. When your pounding in 6-10's thats when the Hat quality is most noticeable. I'm not saying it's enjoyable but she just keeps slugging away and the hull thickness gives you that solid ride. Because older hats are painted it is easier to keep a shine, I use penetrol about once every year to 18 months and the paint on the hull and cabin shine like its new.
