  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1983 - 1987)
My nephew is interested in this wide body 58' Hat MY. I always worry when so much work is done over a short span of time. Certainly many of you have had comments about Red Line, but I think he can get through that. The boat looks very nice and the price is good. Comments are welcome.

Maynard:

I think there was a thread a couple of weeks back about this boat and Redline. My understanding was that the boat was an estate sale, and that Redline did not even have a listing on the boat. Moreover, the owner of Redline showed up uninvited during a showing and insulted a member of this board's wife. I know it seems hard to believe but Redline's reputation is not good. After taking a look at the past thread, you should use the contacts on this network and get to the legtimate broker who represents the seller.

Good luck

A broker who didn't have the boat listed showed up and insulted someone when another broker was showing the boat?

So the boats owner went from "if he shows up again on the boat have him arrested" to giving RedLine the listing?

I went by the boat this afternoon. It sure looks nice from the outside. It's right next to Redline's 53' Hatteras Sportfish at Oceanport Landing in Oceanport, NJ. The owners of the boat used to be members our our Yacht Club. When I first met them, they had a beautiful 53' Hatteras Motoryacht. They sold it a few years later and bought another brand and then recently returned to the Hatteras family only a few years ago. Fred, the husband, passed away a few months ago and his family listed the boat.

The water back where the boat is kept is very well protected, so, other than the tides, not much goes on back there. The marina is owned by a very reputable guy and Redline operates on the property. The owner of the marina was very close to the owner and would help bring the boat back and forth between NJ and FL seasonally. He was responsible for most of the work done, as I understand it.

If your son wants to go over with a few HOF members, WalterP, Saltshaker and myself, I'm sure we can make time for him if he wants to take a look at it and have some people with him. I believe WalterP has previously been on the boat and Saltshaker knows Charlie from Redline.

If it's the right boat, don't let a broker scare you away.

The boat looks good in the photos, except that it appears something has discolored the bed covering in the master stateroom photo. (seriously) I don't know whether that's a photo artifact or real. OTT it looks fine. I agree, if the boat is a candidate it should stand or fall on its' own, with a survey etc.

Dr. Jim, are you talking about the brown spots at the foot of the bed? Those look like the are a part of the pattern of the cover, a weird pattern if it is.

Maynard,

I have been over to Oceanport Landing almost daily during the last two weeks as both my previous Hatteras (43 DC) and my present one (48 MY) were out for annual bottom work and polish job. While there I spoke quite a bit with Charlie (Red Line) and I think the guy has been grossly misunderstood. He is a no nonsense type who has little or no tolerance for tire kickers who are not really serious buyers. As a result he won't normally take the time to list someone's boat who thinks their boat is still worth what it was five years ago or list a dog. He does a lot of sales by buying the realistic sellers boats and quickly reselling it for a fraction of the normal commission. His theory is that he makes just a little on each boat but he sells a lot of boats. Last week he sold six boats and I was standing there when a hopeful buyer drove up to the dock ready to buy the boat he looked at the previous afternoon only to be told by Charlie that it was just sold about a half hour ago and he even introduced the new buyer to the guy.

I think Charlie may benefit from a Dale Carnegie course, but I must say that he may be a bid rough around the edges but I believe he's an honest guy.

Regarding the 58 MY (1985), BETTY ANN, as Larry (Micro Kap) and Jack (Saltshaker), both know, it is IMO in outstanding condition with only two small problems which can be repaired easily. The fairly new Awlgrip paint has peeled on the overhead at both port and stb sides near the sliding pilothouse doors. The other blemish is on the radar arch where there is some typical lifting of the paint on aluminum.

I would strongly suggest that your son act quickly to check it out himself as the boat is a genuine jem and I think it will go soon. I briefly entertained it myself but several reasons stopped me... first it exceeds the 50 foot rule at my club and I won't consider leaving the club and the other is that at my age, (72) I need a bigger boat like a hole in the head.

As Larry Kaplan and Jack Sardina have both said and I concur, the three of us are very close by and would be happy to meet your son and go there with him. By the way, Fred spent a bunch of boat bucks on this boat and there is a large note on it still. (I've been told it's over 400K) but the widow just wants it gone and will take 300 K. not negotiable.

Well, if he's selling a lot of boats he must be doing something right. Hardly anyone else is, despite busting their tails to try and do so.

Thanks Walt and everybody. The prospective buyer is actually my nephew, not my son. He is a well known heart surgeon and has always owned boats. He is a good potential buyer, bbut has little time available to look. I try to run ahead of him. I will forward all these thoughts.

Jim, Even in this crazy economy there are still houses being sold and yes plenty of boats. There is no secret as to how or why.... price them so they sell and presto it's sold. Unfortunately many (most) folks still think that their pride and joy is somehow worth much more than the market will bear. I know it's a bitter pill to swallow but the evidence is pretty clear. There are plenty of bottom fishers out there ready to buy.
