  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
63' COCKPIT MY (1985 - 1987)
I recently had my 63' MY (1986) hauled and antifouled. It was only on hard stand for 4 days but as soon as it was back in water I noticed a high pitched "singing" noise coming from the back of the boat. It is only there when the port side engine is in gear. most noticable at idle, but still there over rev ranges. Kind of sounds like a wine glass rim being played...... The yard said the primary strut bearing had a little bit of play, but it is strange the whining sound only appeared after the haul out.
Motors are 12V71 with 3" shafts. Is there anything I can do to stop this while in the water or should I haul her again and check/replace the strut/cutlass bearing?
I looked at previous posts and there were some suggestions like toothpaste and spagetti pushed into the water grooves of the cutlass ..... is this right ?

Thanks in advance.

THere's a fair chance it will go away on its own. When the boat is out of the water the hull, depending on how it's supported, can change shape and throw the shafts/struts out of alignment. After being back in the water the boat goes back to its "correct" shape - or at the shape that it's "used" to. Give it a few days and see if it quits.

Check to make sure the shaft zinc didn't come loose and slide back against the strut. Did you have the props tuned or cleaned up? If the blades are too sharp they'll sing.

Sounds like the prop edges are singing. This can be a result of having them tuned and polished. It will go away with time as the edges wear a little.

I had one singing prop after having props tuned, but it was only in the RPM range of about 700 through 1100. After that it would go away.

It annoyed me enough though that I changed props on the next haul.

NEVER put anything in the cutlass bearing grooves. The bearing is water lubricated and forward motion of the boat pushes water through those grooves. Also, if the yard did not mask off the cutlass bearings and sanded or blasted off the prior bottom paint, waste material can get into those grooves and score the shafts or plug the bearing. Hopefully it will go away. One safe thing you can do when hauled and dry is to spray WD40 into the bearings and turn the wheels. It will make them very smooth for a very short time until it is washed out with water when running.

Whining sound? Did Randy sneak onto your boat? Might check the bilges. See if there's any beer cans etc in there. :)

I did have the props and shafts ground clean with wire brush and treated with "prop speed".

Had a PM suggesting it was a hydraulic anomoly that would go away once a bit of growth came back a little.

The only beer cans I found in bilge are from my mates and I :)

Thanks all for your suggestions.
