If Robert has the info, great. The Covington shop in Jarret Bay is now owned by Western Branch. Try giving them a call.

I can look it up and shoot some pics tomorrow late. Heading on my own Fall Adventure on Wed 0 dark 30.

I know who not to call. We’re moving boats at the marina for dock construction. Guy was pumping the throttles like crazy on his Cummins and not waiting on the glow plugs-35 degrees last night. “Hey, you know those ain’t gas engines don’t you?” Got to start somewhere. Hope he didn’t flood’em.

This all kinda comes back to original thread when the boat was purchased !!!..........Pat

Call Perkins diesel in Chesapeake Virginia. John has been working on Detroits since the 70's and was involved in a lot of the original high hp. engines. His team will travel, not sure what his labor rate is.
He should be able to steer you in the right direction.

I think you are misreading Cricket’s post. He’s not throwing spears but offering very constructive advice. We’ve all been there and just trying to help you avoid costly mistakes. Where is your boat located? Maybe we can offer some good techs to help you sort this out.

No one likes being talked down to. Sometimes a PM is the way if you feel you can’t be diplomatic on a public forum.

I try to take online forums with a grain of salt but if I take Crickets advise then I won't take his advise. I've never been one to take one persons word as gospel, collect the data, do your own research, and proceed with best option

My vessel is in wrightsville Beach NC

that’s a wise approach. You should never solely rely on the replies from any forum. None of us have ever been on your boat and you don’t know our qualifications. That being said, you’ll learn who’s advise has merit after you become more familiar with most of us. I’ve never met Cricket but I respect his advise based on countless informative post. He’s also been a long time owner and has been through several major refits including rebuilds of Detroits and at least 2 repowers I’m aware of. Never seen an insulting post from him so I’m sure his post was misinterpreted. You will find some off remarks here but it’s almost always sarcasm and light hearted. The vast majority here will go out of their way to help you.

Its that tIM pOWELL guy you have to watch out for.

If your not paying attention he will just help you like it or not.

FWIW my dad has a boat in Wrightsville beach and his mechanics are good guys but not the masters of the trade you need. It could be the area has a need some really good mechanics but his yanmars are not that similar to detroits.

If you’re near Morehead City NC then yes there are some good Detroit guys there. Tim will know a few and has first hand experience with the local Western Branch guys. I’ve never used them but have used Western Branch in Portsmouth VA. Not many Detroit guys at Western Branch anymore. The good ones eventually go out on their own.

Definately gotta watch Tim or he'll slip up and ship you that part you can find anywhere else!

Ageless, Eric (ski in NC on boat diesel forum) is in Wrightsville, Beach. He is an engineer as well as a Detroit expert. See if he will help you. He may not turn wrenches any more but I bet he would know who he likes as a Detroit mechanic. He very well may turn the wrenches. If you can’t get ahold of him holler back and I will see if I can come up with his number.

Ski is one of the mechanics I have been in contact with. He referred me to another who referred me to the one I have. I REALLY wish ski would/could be my tech, super smart and nice dude. Thank you for the post, maybe I'll hit him up again

Robert,I do not have the Covington addendum.
As promised, here are four pics of what you need to know from Covington. Two pics in first post and two in the second. Robert

And the last two. It appears that somewhere along the line the injector timing was changed to what your mechanic is recommending.

Looks like they changed it in 1983. Mine is an 85 model but my book says revised in 1983
