Where Could the Water be Coming From?

Aw heck - who hasn't eaten something they didn't care for and said, "this [whatever] tastes like S%^t!

We had an interesting leak that showed up while running. Everything I could see was tight. One day we were running at 17K on L.I. Sound coming back from Montauk. I turned the helm over to the S.O. and went looking in the bilge.

Water was showering down from the main engine strainer which is outboard of the engine.

When we got back and tied up, the water had stopped. So I closed the valves and waited for things to cool off. It was one of those "easy access" chores. 0413081435.webp

As it turned out, the strainers were only screwed onto the nipple from the seacock by one turn. I disassembled them both removed the plate that screwed onto the nipple, cleaned it all up, taped the threads and reinstalled it all.

I figure the person who installed them was interrupted and did not finish the job.

You might also check your shower drains. I just found the master has a cracked coupling nut beneath it. This will be a PITA job due to poor access.

No progress figuring out the cause. I have not moved the boat, nor has it rained. I was out of town for three days and had a friend check the bilge and he found very little accumulation. Sunday night I pumped out about 8 gallons total. I brought a utility pump to keep on the boat and used it rather than the shop vac I can measure.

Since the pump out on Sunday night, I checked the bilge today and pumped out no more than one gallon accumulation over 4 days.

Saturday I hope to spend some time on the boat installing an ER bilge pump and also investigating.

Regards,

Are any of the over the side discharge openings at or below the water line? Are you leaving the dockside water turned on at the shore side valve?

Did you find out if it was fresh or not? While away from the boat do you turn off the water pump for your house water? If you're hooked up to the dock water make sure that's off to. If those are off check to see if there is any water. If there is it might be the water tank. You can read on this site how they can split. Good luck.

It must be the rudder stuffing box.

After about 4 hours on the boat poking around cleaning the stbd bilge from fwd engine bulkhead to transom I've excluded about every source except the rudder.

The advice regarding food coloring was helpful. I added red coloring to the water tank which made the FW heads a nice rose color. I ran water thru all faucets, observed pink water in the sinks and shower, but none in the bilge. I had cleaned and dried with paper towels the stbd ER bilges and they stayed dry for over 2 hours.

I then went to the bilge under the aft cabin, added green food coloring and water and it didn't take long for the ER bilges to all have green water. When water flows into the bilge behind the engine bed, if there is any significant accumulation, if flows over the aft dam, which is very low due to a clearance cut out for the shaft coupling.

After drying the ER bilge again and vacuuming the aft cabin bilge I started the stbd engine let it run at high idle and looked allover for any evidence of a leak. The only leak evidenced was the small amout of puddling on top of the rudder stuffing box that has been apparent since I first checked it.
.

thanks for the helpful advice.
