What's everybody in Fla doing about Irma?

I have nothing to add that has not already been said.

Tied her down good. Got on a flight from Ft Lauderdale to CT last night.

Sick as I am from thinking my Big Boat adventure might end before it starts, we are safe and that is really what matters.

CP is calling for a slightly inland path for Irma. Good news for the Bahamas bad news for Fl.. Land fall in the upper keys.

Found a private dock in st Pete. Heading out first light tomorrow (too risky to run at night thru the keys with thousand of pots)

Will you run the channel west from Marathon? Stay safe.

Bobk

Best of luck to all, and may we all be safe and our boats as well.

Pots are more risky than a cat 5 heading your way?

I'm sure I don't have to tell you, or anybody else looking at a late departure, losing an engine or prop would equal a huge risk of this being a final voyage.

Here's my question....what mechanism in ALL the models is causing the predicted track to have a nearly 90 degree right turn to go due north along florida? I haven't seen a single model that has the track continuing on it's path NW...nor do I see any having it turn hard into the Atlantic.

I came across a site a while ago that shows global wind patterns. It helps visualize the flow of things.

https://earth.nullschool.net

While it doesn't explain the why of pressure systems and Coriolis effect it's a good tool. Great graphics at least.

Man you are cutting it close. Godspeed.

People here in Vero are panicking now cops are at the few stations that still have gas and at lowes they're coming to blows over screws and plywood. Talking to the sheriff at lowes said looters are already breaking into houses that have been boarded up.

At this point, if you are still in SE Florida, walk away. Those who were able to pull will fare well, those stuck on modern floating docks will likely be ok unless holed by derelict boat. If you are stuck on a static dock, kiss her good buy and hope she survives.

BTW, we have some room in Central Florida(Clermont) if you need a safe location.

I just looked at the marine forecast for Fl Straits. Fri seas 3-5 building to 5-7 in the afternoon. Fri night seas 9-11 winds 30-35kts gusting to 45kts. Be safe and screw the 10kt cruise BS. I'd want to get through there and to St Pete as early as possible.

Change of plans... st Pete no longer make sense in view of the westerly shift of the NHC tracks. So after spending the day preparing my boats and other things, we dropped the lines at midnight and are heading east. NE 12/14 kts in the stream wasn't bad although even in the dark I could tell instantly when we hit the stream. Still a good ride at 21kts. Just passing Cat Cay right now will loses signal soon till Chub-Andros

Hopefully the damn NW won't be too bad. Supposed to be 15/18 kts by the time we get by Chub around 7am

After Nassau we ll run on the bank to Hatchett Bay on Eleuthera which wil out is about 220nm from Irma. Well away from the hurricane force winds and just on the edge of tropical force wind

Hatchett Bay is a small pond with a very narrow cut into the rocks on the south west shore

Another reason I dropped st Pete was that should the storm shift west, we wouldn't have enough fuel to make Panama City on plane and there is no guarantee of getting fuel along the way. By Saturday big bend is supposed to be getting 20kts from the north...

Pascal,

Good luck!

In 04 I saw almost every boat at Harbortown that were on the hard blown over like dominos. Of course it was still better than the city marina clusterf if your hauled make sure the jack stands are chained together and don't walk when the gusts hit

Pascal, your insurance company should foot the bill on that effort. Good ride to ya...

Dam this Sucks I don't know what to add except us Yankees up here will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.
A winter snow storm is looking real good about now.

Stay Safe.
