For all you Nor' Easters. In the movie Jaws, Quint mentions "It's not like goin down to the pond and Chasin' Blue Gills or Tommy Cots." So what exactly is a Tommy Cot? A few friends of mine who grew up in Waymouth MA, and on the Cape in Falmouth weren't 100% sure and could only assume.

Anyone know for sure, or is this Quint slang?

I am not from there but it sounds like slang for Tom Cats or catfish maybe with the reference to bluegills. Just a thought.
Here is a link to info on tommy cod. Kinda looks like a cross between a catfish and a cod.

I think he was referring to Tommy Cod. As in Cod.

Remember he was an English actor, so it could have been an oops while he was doing an American accent.

I believe they are a species of cod - Tommy cod - also called frost fish. Not too prevalent any more, but used to be able to catch them in estuaries of LIS.

I figured it must be a small relative of the Cod Fish, but he said, and even the script of the movie said, Tommy Cot, thats why I wasn't sure.
