What happens to these old girls as they are aging?

Don't you still have a 60 year old boat with relatively cramped quarters and an aging approach to boat's purpose? I dunno, I vacillate on whether its worth upgrading an old design to modern fit/finish. That being said, yes a modern big Hatt is well out of reach of a mere mortal. Only billionaires can play in that pool.

Our Yachtfisherman is on it's second refurbishment in her 51 years. When we bought our boat around 17 years ago, she had just finished a refit when we bought her. the refit consisted of fresh teak paneling of most interior walls, new "updated" galley, updated heads, teak n holly floors and a full exterior Algrip respray to Matterhorn white. Although the "updating" was nice and looked new, it essentally was mostly renewing what was already there. today our plan is to modernize our boat to something resembling new contemporary while paying homage to its traditional lines. i think the proper approach to deciding and planning what to do and how far to take it obviously is directly proportional to how much you want to spend, and do you have the stomach and the patience to project manage and see it though to the finish. (this has given me an idea for a new forum thread)

Every response to this thread has backed up every other response to this thread. Awesome!😎😎😎

Find me another brand of yacht that has the enthusiastic and loyal following that old Hatteras yachts enjoy. I don't think there is one, and for good reason. There are other decent boats, but not like a Hatteras.

This is probably a good time in the thread to express thanks to Sam's Marine and the thought that went into its creation.

The long term potential and value of Hatteras antique boats exceeds its peers because we still have a parts store that can look up our original equipment with our HIN.

Sam's is what makes restoring antique Hatteras yachts viable.

Thank you all.

Great comments here. There's a love of the lines, quality and nostalgia. Most of us can remember these boats back in the day and some were lucky enough to own then up to now. The wife and I will go to boat shows and look at what we could have done instead. Newer boat with less needed. Completely different style. Single level design.
An old boat just speaks to me. Ours stood off the page at first sight. Much like an old car or house, they tell a story and deserve the care. Most new boats are for those without that attachment. Use, sell, replace.
Can't ignore all of the fantastic features. Find another 48' of any kind with as much living space, tankage and yes, steps. We should have named ours stairmaster. Only a few newer brands feel built the same instead instead of produced. Maybe a Vicem, Nordhavn, or Viking. To each their own but old soul will always be for me.

X2 i know the specific boat information Sams has shared with me over the years is priceless

This has been an interesting thread, We got lucky and found our boat just before the mad covid prices hit, She had sat on the hard (not neglected but not used), for a few years and needed some systems gone over to get everything working as it should again, I feel we are very fortunate to be her caretakers for this part of her life, I know we will not be the last owners. In just a short ten years from now we'll be in our 80's and will pass her along to the next caretakers. I often feel that I am an imposter by owning such a beautiful boat and being a part of this group here, The support from this forum and Sam's is a huge part of being a Hatteras owner and caretaker. The only thing that I can say is although she is in really good shape she will go on to the next owner better then we found her.
