This is a link to free cell phones and minutes for folks at poverty level. Somehow our gov thinks we need to supply folks with cell phones and pay their monthly bill? To top it off they are running tv adds! I damn near fell out my chair last night when I saw this. I bet if we all hold back taxes for a quarter, the boneheads will start to listen!

Why work if it all comes to you free.

Cell phones are not a basic need. Food Clothing and shelter. After that you should be on your own.

You are just seeing the very tip of the iceburg.
It's been going on for years with landlines. I have been installing lines for free for the scum of the earth (well, least the scum in Jacksonville) for a long time as we are force to give free service. Guess it's so most of them can call their parole officers and/or drug dealers.
I have zero problem when I'm sent to a house that has a 90+ yr old person who hasn't two cents to their name. They actually do need service and do not have the money to pay for it...
But when it's for a 24 yr old woman who had 5 kids and no job, nor WANTS a job.............

That really rubs me the wrong way and I have no problem cutting people like that off completely. I have a relative who worked the system like that and was offended when she was asked to work an afternoon at the library once a week in exchange for being government freeloader. Last I heard (years and years ago), she was excited about getting a free home from Habitat...I wonder if she ever lifted a finger to build it.

I can see these phones for the elderly or disabled ... and even then I might say that the phones work only to emergency services. Free phones for folks just unwilling to work makes no sense.

I believe the basic service for landlines was limited to the dial tone and local calls but was mostly for emergency use. Why cant these people use the land line?

I looked up the Florida info and found that the income to qualify goes up with each kid they have. Scary to see the list go to 8 kids and after that add $??? per child.

I like the e mail a buddy of mine sent me ,about having to take a urine test to get a job and continue to work and how we should make all those who receive from the gov the ones who should be forced to take the p*** test to continue to receive thier check ,cell phones, welfare, food stamps WIC etc. I 'll try to find it and repost it here...........Pat

I've been kvetching about that for years. Why should I have to follow the rules to support the ones who don't

Deactivated cellphones will still dial 911. They need it for emergency? Give them an old phone.

Yep - any cell that can get a signal will dial 911 - if its a GSM phone it doesn't even have to have a SIM card in it!

People before u make "assumptions" find out the facts b/c we all know the saying and just by reading these judgmental comments have made the saying true! :D Welfare ended in 1996 however there is a government assistance called "Tanf" It's for working people. The catch is if u are unemployed u have to find employment within 48 days to receive a check. If u find employment u don't get anything and by the way the amount is based on how many kids u have, mom and a child 230.00 every month, mom and 2 kids 280.00 and four kids is 330.00 a month any more u are out of luck! If u don't find a job u have to attend a class 40 hours a week searching for a job or attending a Vocational school or a Technical College. In order to receive assistance w/ childcare u have to apply for "Tanf" a.k.a "Welfare" It seems Tanf is for young moms are any aged moms enrolled in school having a "Little" hard time. We all experience obstacles not everyone was born with a silver spoon or with family support. You have to survive by any means, I'm 24 and have worked since I was 16, I didn't have anyone involved in my life to sign a "work permit" and in GA u must have one to work. I had to choose a job over school at 16. I still graduated and attended a Technical college and obtain a AA in Early Childhood and I still don't make enough and yes some Government benefits are beneficiary I pay taxes so I feel like I'm entitled to it If I need it. I'm going back to school but in the mean time some extra help will do. The government is a joke! ppl wouldn't deal with them unless they have to. The phone can come in handy for a student falling on hard times especially w/ kids, I know b/c I was her once in a old broke down hot car w/ a child. What can u do with a 60 min prepaid Tracfone? These days u have to work for everything and that's great we all want better for ourselves and those that don't I pity u! The statement about "gubment" is pretty "Pathetic" u are "GUBMENT" lol whatever that is?

Learn to type not text. This is not your free phone this is the HOF forum.

I never got free stuff to go to school. I am still paying it back. Why shouldn't you and all the recipients of the free stuff pay it back?

It's a bit like the concept of social security. The concept is sound but the implementation is screwed up.

If you need a little help you get it. When you get on your feet pay it back. Not by paying taxes but pay back the money you recieved from the help program so some other needy person can go through the cycle.

Oh and one other question. Why should the amount you get be based on the number of kids you have. I have one and I pay for him. His school and clothes and everything else he needs including doctors and medicines. I can't afford another because I pay for the children I bring into this world. I expect others to do the same.

Sounds to me like you are someones kid who feel entitled to whatever she wants. the name "beauty" shows you are pretty proud of yourself yet you can not stand on your own yet.

Try to figure out what you need to give up to pay the bills next month. See if there are extra shifts available at work or is work you can do elsewhere to cover your expenses. tell the family that they can not have something they want until you get caught up on the bills. maybe miss the vacation because you can't afford on this year. This is reality for many working people who bust their but to make a life for themselves .

If you don't like the "gubment cheese" don't take the check.

Look at the Cajuns and "Coonasses" in the south. They are the ones who do not want the gubmint cheese. They don't want any help from outsiders. The family takes care of their own. If someone needs help they get it and when they are able they give it.

Don't feed the trolls!

You need help and money, go to private charities. That's how it used to be!

I was unable to get any financial aid or low interest guaranteed student loans. My parents were not rich but they lived within their means. They owned everything outright. No loans no credit card debt etc. They always drove basic cars that they kept for several years. I had friends whose parents made much more than mine but because they had so much debt they received student aid. Something is wrong with a system that rewards irresponsible behavior and punishes responsible living. BTW my parents had 5 kids and even when my dad was out of work, never received any welfare or free phones. They managed to give us a good life and put us through college on their own, without any of us knowing how tough things were for them.

I paid for my own college myself. When I applied for financial aid/student loan, I was told “No. You don’t qualify; you own a house.” If had sold my house and become homeless, I would have qualified for the moon and the stars...and a free phone, I suspect, but I did my part and paid my own way, and I still pay for my own phone.

I have relatives and there friends that never work. They have many children between them. There rent is paid for, they receive food stamps, free medical and free food, free phone, free clothing, free lights, and free heating. They also all have cars. They are required to do nothing to get these free services. Why should they work, life is free for them. They set around and smoke pot or snort coke. I don't buy this crap of free everything. I too have worked for everything I have. What is going to happen when these funds dry up? When the working people loose there jobs. They are already dealing with an increase in B&E's and home invasions. They just laid off 150 cops do to lack of funds. What's next. There is the beginning to be a shortage of brass ammo. I sure like my bunker. Just keep your power dry. Your going to need it. Now there trying to screw with the people that have carry permits. Just be thankful that we have a new president that is straightening things out. I feel so much better knowing hes is in office.

I just saw a story on the news about these mothers who claim they don't have enough money to feed their children. It's hard to have sympathy for these women who appear on TV having salon-manicured, sculptured nails, trendy streaked (dyed) hair, and an abundance of make up and jewlery. Before I had a Hatt, I used to have my nails done. I can tell you that runs about $50 every two weeks. It just irks me to see people publically yelling poverty and begging for sympathy (and our tax dollars) when they are spending money on lavish, personal stuff like that. Quit drooling over your hair and nails and go spend that money on food for your kids instead!
