Water Filtration

I know everyone has a different solution to the issue, but was looking for a setup that someone has been very happy with for filtering water before it goes into the boat.

I've seen those very long carbon filters on docks in Florida...i think people use to prefilter water before coming into boat and also for filtering water before they clean the boat so as not to leave water drips.

My water has a real funny taste to it (jersey city water) and I think that coupled with my older fiberglass tanks it ends up a bit funky. Also, when water sits in water heater too long it develops a real funky odor...I end up having to open up HW tank and pour in a bunch of hydrogen peroxide to neutralize the bacteria (I have a brand new zinc / magnesium annode in there but it isn't strong enough to combat the bacteria formation).

So...just looking for a nice filter setup that is convenient to use, not out of control expensive, can be kept outdoors (on dock), connected to garden hose, and that is easy to service / replace filters as necessary. Any ideas?

I've set up a couple of different systems for various owners. The most common one is two household filters in a series. Use a particulate filter in one and a charcoal in the other. You could then run it to a Spotfree to soften the water if you want to get fancy. This would create a "3 stage" filter. A Spotfree should run about $200. The other filters can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. Buy some garden hose and replacement fittings to make your connections.
