I don't have any images yet, but that 72 Hatteras became the victim of chainsaws today. The Town of Palm Beach says the pile should be removed before Matthew gets here tomorrow.

What a story. Scary thing is the "owner" will probably have another boat soon and again be again sailing the waters enjoying his LI tea. Reads like he took the cash, made the dash, prob judgement proof and has the experience to re-invent himself yet again. Meanwhile, as always the taxpayer and those of us who try to abide by rules are left to clean it all up (literally and figuratively.) Wonder who has the book and movie rights?

According to the newspaper, After a month of being battered ashore, it appears the eventual port side hull breach made it impossible to refloat her. With the approach of Hurricane Matthew, The Town of Palm Beach had no choice but to get stuck with the $200,000 removal bill. It was sand they pumped out of the hull before dragging the whole thing ashore to be chain sawed. Apparently, the owner was insured. The insurance company says it paid the claim. Yet the owner is refusing to reimburse the Town in what will probably end up as a long court battle. I would love to be on THAT JURY! I think the moron should face additional charges for destroying Sea Turtle nests too!

This is frankly disgusting. At some point, that was a brand-new boat, and the owner's pride and joy. Think of all the people in New Bern who labored to create that boat, a thing of beauty when new. It really is sad. I hope the jackass that did this ends up in jail- longer, this time.

To a Hatteras lover this episode brings to mind the crazy Taliban blowing up all those thousands of years old monuments in the middle east. Obviously not nearly the same because we can build more boats (but not vintage Hatts). Those monuments are not replaceable. Some people should not be allowed to own a Hatteras...what a jerk.

[FONT=&quot]The boat's captain, Thomas Baker, says authorities did not properly protect his yacht when they arrested him after he ran it ashore in September.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]Baker was charged with boating under the influence after he admitted to drinking several Long Island ice teas before crashing it just south of the Palm Beach Inlet.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]In Baker's lawsuit, he claims at that time he asked police if they could make arrangements to secure the vessel. According to him, that did not happen.[/FONT]

[FONT=&quot]The yacht remained in the inlet for several weeks, eventually forcing the town and state to deal with the costs to remove it.[/FONT]

I have a feeling he has a good chance to prevail. The boat should have been removed asap then

I think the boat suffered major damage if not a total loss before he was arrested. She was hard aground and appeared to be taking on water in the early pics. It wasn't a simple tow off a sandbar and I doubt the end results would be any different had he not been arrested. Sad ending for any boat.

Don't know any of the details other than what's been posted here but suing a municipality is much harder than an individual or corporation. Given he broke the law and has a history it would seem tough to place liability on the town.

Suing and winning are two different animals. Filing is cheap and defending costs money. I'm sure it's nothing but a crow bar. In other words, a tool for leverage.
