  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
When I pulled up the carpet I noticed a small exhaust leak coming from between the exhaust and air side on the port outboard turbo. I pulled it off and low and behold their were metal parts inside and a lot of oil on the exhaust side. 2 pieces found inside the turbo are laying on the air inlet side of the turbo in the picture. My question is, what in the hell are they? Don't look like anything inside the head. No way the big ones could have passed through the exhaust valves... Is it part of the turbo? What would have made it come apart?

And of course my local shop can't find a replacement. I see online that Naples Turbo has a replacement for cheap. I think it was right over a grand. Does anyone have experience with them?

Thanks

any pics of the metal pieces?

They're laying on the turbo in the 2nd picture. You can see them laying around the air intake. To me they appear to have the same circumference as the turbo casings around the center.

Here's the link by itself.Turbo.webp

hey also show a link for an original Garret but it says call for availability. They are closed fro the rest of the week.
Those pieces look like a band clamp. Are the clamps still on? A small exhaust leak can cut through them easy.

I hate this sounds so negative, but...those turbos are all over the place on the web at same price. Figure they're ChiCom. You could likely rebuild yours. Also, have you tried a DD distributor? I think I'd like to have an OEM rebuilt if what you're looking at is an Alibaba special. Or you could just get it from Walmart, and they're open all week: https://www.walmart.com/ip/NEW-TURB...4-0001-407524-9001S-TH08A64-4081405/115038577 . Pretty much assures you it's Chinese, right? Plus, I don't see anything about a core charge.

Right, Naples Turbo has a say in the process.

"We call our aftermarket products “generic” as we order them without any names or markings so that our customers can resell them if they wish. But rest assured, they are not just any ordinary aftermarkets. We hold our suppliers to very high standards and quality that is just as good as the name brands or sometimes even better."

Total BS. Might be a good turbo. Let us know.

Take it to a turbo shop and have it rebuilt for $400. Get new clamps and put it back on. I agree that those parts did not come out of that turbo.

Email Scrod on this forum and ask him. He is in the turbo business and he has a Hatteras also.

"Scrod" aka "Avenger".......................Pat

Where were the metal pieces located when you took the turbo off?

I'm not certain you have a bad turbo. Oil on the exhaust side can just be from excessive idle.

Wiggle the turbo shaft, how much play do you have? Spin the turbine, is it really rough/wobbly? Is there any damage to the blades?

Last time you ran the boat what rpm did you do and for how long (approx of course)

Where the parts were located in the turbo is critical in determining where they came from. I've never had that particular turbo apart but as far as I know there is no internal component to the band clamp. It's possible it could be the flange of the turbo where the exhaust and intake portions connect, hence the exhaust leak from the turbo. It should be pretty easy to pull apart. If you are not comfortable with that, take it to a turbo shop. Way less expensive than buying new and they can possibly source replacement housing parts if that it the issue.

A pic of the exhaust side might help. It almost looks like part of the internal volute but I can't say I've ever seen them fail like that before.

A bigger pic of any of them would help too.

I am in the process of having my Port Side turbo's replaced......so, I can only offer limited knowledge.
In my search I also called Naples turbo. They quoted me a price of 1,050.00 per turbo, which at first I thought was a steal based on two other quotes for $1,950.00 and $1,998.00. But these were Chi-Comm turbo's and in my research of Customer reviews and online turbo forums the consensus of those who bought Chi-Comm said they were not balanced properly, can disintegrate, and did not last.

That cured me fast and I decided to get Garrett replacement turbo's.

Call Derek at East Coast Diesel Service 1-516-887-9220. Derek was very knowledgeable, patient, and helped me through the process.

Best of luck,
R

Here's a picture of the damage to the housing itself. Hard to see in there or get a good pic. Not sure how to make it bigger as an attachment. Sorry.

Pieces are definitely not band clamp. They look like part of a casting.

Yes, the boat has idled a lot this year. The last time it went out it never got over 1200. it idles for 10 to 15 minutes getting back into the marina every time it goes out. The motor ran great before I pulled the turbo off.

The shop here in Knoxville said they couldn't build it and couldn't find a replacement.

The pieces were between the exhaust inlet and the blades. Yes, the blades are damaged.

The air side is undamaged and the turbo feels tight, spins free and has minimal end play.

Still looks like part of the volute. Can we see a pic of the exhaust exit too? I'm speculating, but you have a corrosion problem.

If the turbine blades are damaged the turbo is in bad shape. I'm looking into a replacement for you, but haven't found an answer yet.

Avenger, no there is no corrosion present.

You can't see much from the outlet side. Just damage to the fins on the incoming side.

Thanks for your help!

Now I know why the number looks familiar. The exhaust housing appears to be obsolete. I'm trying to talk to someone in engineering to see if we can substitute a different A/R ratio housing without causing a problem. I'll let you know if I get any good answers.

Try DMS Turbo in West Palm Beach...
They're old school so you have to call them, Dave 561-644-6537
One of their specialties is to reline turbo housings bringing them back into spec.
Getting ready to send him our CAT turbos to bring them back to spec, or better, because we're at 5,000 hrs and our boost numbers are approaching the low range of "in spec".
The housings wear away from the heat and they will match it up with a new cartridge for better performance.
Many years ago they did our 8v92 turbos and it was a huge improvement over the turbos from J & T, less smoke with more power.

Thanks Avenger. Cricket, if Avenger cant get something I will give them a call. Thanks.
