Police recover stolen car worth $130,000

A joy ride in a very expensive car landed a man in jail.
It wasn't hard for police to spot the stolen car because you don't see very many red Ferraris around town.
A picture shows the 2001 Ferrari 550 Maranello that was on the lot of Steve Harris Imports at 800 South and Main Street. The car is worth $130,000.
Around 12:15 this afternoon, employees were moving the cars around. Police say they left the keys in the Ferrari. It was idling in the lot when someone walked by and jumped in.
Robin Snyder of the Salt Lake City Police Department said, "He was able to get in and drive away without anybody really seeing him get into it."
The car has tinted windows, so employees didn't see the person in the car.
Less than an hour later, a Salt Lake City police officer had just finished training. He heard the call go out for the stolen Ferrari and happened to see it in the area of 400 South and 600 East. He pulled over and arrested the driver, who is identified as Mike P.
Police don't know why Mike P. stole the car. Police say after he stole the car, he went to Paul Thomas Jewelers on 57 W. 200 South and stole a diamond ring worth $1,900. He then went to Midtown Pawn on 1083 S. State St. and pawned the ring. Mike stated he took the money he got from the pawn shop to buy gas to drive to Maryland.
We showed up on the scene moments after the arrest, and the car was already gone and back to the dealership. Police say the car was not damaged.
Mike P. does have a criminal history. He was arrested for theft of a 53' Hatteras.
