  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
As Freebird says, “there’s only one way to find out what they will sell it (the boat) for”. I found out about a month ago. I ended up buying the 48 Long Range Cruiser in Charleston that was for sale a couple of years ago. I read all of your comments, the survey and basically researched the boat and my options until my head hurt. Both gennies inop, toilet inop, bilge pump inop, engines possibly inop, it’s been sitting in the mud, and on and on.
The good news was that I had a 8kw Northern Lights generator with 100 hours that I bought cheap sitting in my garage that I had purchased for another boat and ended up not using. So, I made an offer and it was accepted. I talked to the owner and he had fixed most of what was found on the survey some of you saw. It still has issues but I’ve bought less for more money.
After I bought the boat and towed it to Ross Marine, I had a local (to Charleston) Detroit Diesel guy (Doug Umphrey, Tri-State Diesel) go over the engines. He said he had worked on the boat a few years ago and remembered it. He said the engines were in great condition except for a few hard fuel lines and a leaky raw water pump on the starboard engine. Doug is a great guy, great Detroit guy and a wealth of information. He taught me a lot of things about the 4-53 that I did not know.
I got a little caught up in the history of the boat so I renamed the boat Coyaba, which is the same name that the original purchaser, Carlton Mitchell, named it when he bought it. It’s Arawak Indian for “Place of Rest”. I know I’m a long way from the boat being a place of rest but I thought it was good name so I went with it.
The fact that it was docked behind the owner’s house and only floated at high tide brought special challenges but not insurmountable. The boat is now at Ross Marine in Charleston to pull the inop gennies and install the 8kw NL. I’ll use the 8kw on the way home. I’m going to take the 15kw genny home and see what I can do to revive it over the winter. It will also get new packing for the shafts and rudder logs and new bottom paint while at Ross.
I plan to take it to Tennessee after the work is completed. It needs a lot of attention that I plan to give it over the next couple of years. When my wife retires, we’ll cruise if we are able. More to come.

Sweet! Enjoy the whole journey.

Congrats on the purchase and glad I was able to “help”. Those are great boats.

Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks!
