  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
I have a question about using a travel lift in my 1976 46' hatteras soort fisherman. The boat yard said i dont need spreaders (4 slings) to lift the boat. But i think theres too much weight in one spot with just using 2 slings. I notice that theres stress cracks where the slings were in the past. I just bought this boat and its new to the yard. Thanks for any help

It really depends on the size of the travel. The bigger the lift the bigger the surface area of the slings, meaning they are usually wider. In San Diego the yard I use easily lifts boats like mine and larger with just 2 slings but they are probably over a foot wide. Spreading the load over either wider or more slings is always better. It’s your boat you might want to insist they double strap you. John

Some yards will charge more for double strapsYou should also be able to get a graving drawing from Hatteras to show strap positioning etc. Mine shows all weights and dimensions to include shipping cradle.

My 41 and 45 were always lifted with 2 straps. There are load ratings on them and most good yards know most boat weights. They also have weight meters on the travel lifts they watch, to make sure load does not excede manufactures limits. If you remember to ask, they will tell you the weight of your boat at that time.
