  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' TWIN CABIN (1965 - 1971)
Which transmission is typically behind the DD 4-53's in a 42' Hatteras LRC?

Probably a Twin Disc 506, I would guess.

Had a friend with a 48 LRC with 453s. Definitely Borg Warner, 72 or 73 series in that boat, if that info helps.

Yes, very helpful. The BW transmission was my suspicion.

Borg Warner velvet drives attached to the 4v53’s in our 42LRC.

2.9:1 reduction according to the brochures archive

Eric, I had to replace both BW Velvet 72 trannys because they rusted out due to PO let the raw water pumps leak on them. Hatteras 4-53 conversion has the raw water pump way out over the tranny and they run about two years before they have to be rebuilt. I had two extra pumps so I could rotate them with Depco pump in Florida.
Also BW wanted to spec. transmission fluid, but the military made them spec. 40 wt. Motor oil cause that's what they had in the field. I used tranny fluid.

Been here.
ATF is fine.
I ran 30w in my personal LBC-gas Borgs.

There is not much spec on the ATF to use. Many used Dextron, I preferred Type F. Ford used a lil more anti-foaming additives in their spec.

With this same thought, I used CF-2 30W (Detroit oil) because of its anti-foaming and shear additives.

Never had a Velvet Drive issue in any of mine or customers boats.

I kept my customers at what they were using (oil or ATF). My boats used oil.
