  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series II (1990 - 1995)
So while I was idling up to our anchor yesterday, a visiting child got their paws on the throttle right before I put it in gear. I wasn't watching the tach, but I think it got up to about 900+rpm when the transmission engaged. The boat gave quite a lurch and we almost lost my wife overboard. After we sat down the child and gave her a stern lesson about how touching engine controls can kill people, we headed home with no issues. When I finally took a look in the ER, I saw a nice oil spray pattern under that transmission. How worried should I be?? Pressure and temp were fine heading home, but we were traveling at hull speed. Is there anything I should do at this point besides keeping an eye on oil level/pressure?

I assume you have a Allison trans, I have heard that you can go from full throttle forward to full throttle reverse with a Allison. (Although I would not!) seems that it was a coast guard test for emergency stop for passenger carrying vessels. They are pretty much bullit prof and 900rpm would not be a concern

Well, good to know about allison's, but I have Twin Disc DD5111V. Sounds like if they're built even to half of that spec, we should be OK.

If the tranny's are good their's no issue. My Topaz idles at 750 and throttles up when you put it in gear. With my Hatt due to the butt kicking current the only way to get her into the slip is 8-900 rpms. Never had any issues although it does worry me as well. Bill

Could be a rear trans. seal leaking, have seen it on twin disc.

All good info -- thanks!

For what it's worth, the Twin Disc manual for the transmissions I had on TUCANDU specifically stated "DO NOT SHIFT ABOVE 900 RPM", so you should be OK.

Thanks, Bill. I was a little above, but sounds like we're probably ok.
