JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
The Mathews Bridge will be completely closed to traffic for at least four days due to structural damage from a ship under tow hitting the span.

Late Thursday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the bridge will be "closed indefinitely."

"This will be the most significant delay the city has seen in a long time," JSO Assistant Chief Leonard Propper said.

Channel 4 has learned the ship that struck the bridge about 2 p.m. was the USNS Harry L. Martin, a Sealift Command vessel that was being moved from one part of the North Florida Shipyards to another.

A vertical ramp on the stern of the ship shows damage.

Ship after hitting Mathews Bridge The U.S. Coast Guard said the ship was under tow. Crews are enforcing a 200-yard safety zone around the bridge while the accident is investigated.

The Florida Department of Transportation structural engineers were assessing the damage and structural integrity to the span.

"One of the supports was damaged," FDOT spokesman Michael Goldman said, adding the bridge is closed to ensure that the weight of vehicles does not cause additional damage.

Goldman said the bridge will remain closed to traffic at least through Monday.

"The damage to the concrete sections of the metal grating is extensive and the bridge will be closed for some time," said Rod Sullivan, a Florida Coastal School of Law professor who specializes in marine incidents.

This shows a few pictures of the crash... The ship needs 146' clearance, at high tide (when they tried to get thru) is 152'... Then add on the car/cargo ramp that sticks up even higher...... that they didn't lower.....

109,000 cars a day use the bridge... And how there is no idea how long it will take to repair...
SO GLAD I no longer live there

Glad I'm not going out the river today. Boat traffic temporarily stopped while they investigate.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Engineers with the Department of Transportation were on the Mathews Bridge on Friday morning assessing damage from a ship strike Thursday. They must determine how quickly it can be repaired and reopened to traffic.

The safety zone in the St. Johns River that was established by the Coast Guard was lifted Thursday night and the waterway is now open to marine traffic.
