Well, I've decided to stay put in NC for this winter and starting to plan one of my projects to replace carpet , wall paper and new fabric cornice boards. Any suggestions on type of carpet to look at? With cockpit access to engine room there are very few areas that will require cutting whatever carpet I choose. Companion way stairs and one small access hatch in each stateroom will need to be cut but doubt it will require binding. Also will I need carpet padding?
I have a canvass runner that snaps down to protect the carpet from stains when were fishing. Would like to pick something high quality I don't plan to replace it every few years if possible.

I've always used nylon carpeting. Cut edges tend to fray and look crappy after a few months; binding them would be a good idea. You can also use metal trim on the openings and hatches to keep the edges from fraying. I recarpeted my 36C several times and finally had Lonseal vinyl flooring installed on the calon deck and head compartment deck. Wish I'd done it years ago.

If the carpet is secured, you don't need padding, but it might help for noise. Interestingly, my boat's salon is no more noisy running than it was with carpet in it... but I am not there much when the boat is running.
