Thinking (casually) about a new boat

I was really hot to trot for the LRC for a while. One other observation, if my recollection is correct, is the size of the aft deck on the 58LRC. Seems to me the seating area was rather small for the rest of the boat. It is personal prefrence, of course, but that is where we spend most of our time.

I have to take exception to these comments. I would say that LRC's are more well cared for than any other Hatteras out there.

Mike, you wont be happy with only 3-4' of water as you really need 6 to feel comfortable. Mine came out of Kent Narrows and I'm happy to discuss the highs/lows of them if you want to give me a call or PM......

These are some of the best boats EVER built.

Maybe Dave Stahl ("Skooch") will chime in on the 58LRC he just bought. Fits R Smith's description exactly (I think he's seen Dave's boat). Also fits all but one of the 58's I shopped 4 years ago and at least one fairly well known one on the blogs that gets cruised regularly. So I'd say they are no different one way or the other from other boats in that respect on a percentage basis.

Hopefully everyone feels their boat is one of the best boats ever built, I know I do, at least for me and what we use and have used a boat this size for. I FAR prefer the ergonomics and interior layout of my boat. For US, the perfect boat would be mine, maybe with a little cockpit, but an LRC hull form and drive train, though I have to admit it is nice to be able to push her up to a blazing 14 knots if needed, it comes at a price!

You're probably right about the percentage comment. I've been on 5 LRC's and they were in varying conditions. I'm also at the Bluewater in Hampton today, where there are about a dozen Hatts -all varying conditions.

With regards to the 58 engine room, its a walk in with full head room. Everything.is easily accessible.

Mike, if it hasn't been mentioned already been mentioned , the key issue IMO is whether your going to go LRCing in the boat. The boat you have will take you anywhere in the Caribe, Bahamas ETC you want to go. So the additional costs may be justified if you are going to do some serious Blue Water Cruising, otherwise you have alot of negatives if the boat is just going to be used casually, ie going to Florida for the winter etc.

But of course I totally understand that when it comes to boats it doesn't have to make sense, if you want it-you want it. nough said

For the difference in price you can buy an awful lot of diesel fuel for Brigadoon, and go an awful lot of places. And RS is right- the 53 you have is in some ways the best one out there for you, because it is already yours and you don't have to take a bath to own it. You could always take the 8-71s out and put in a pair of 4-71 naturals, then you would have the best of both worlds- a large slow economical boat that says "Hatteras" on the side....

But seriously- I thought long and hard about buying a Series II 45C and repowering it with M11 Cummins- I know how fast and how well such a boat would run. VERY tempting- but it wouldn't change the kind of boating I do, except that I would have to leave the slip that I have and love, and it would cost me at least three times as much every time I went out on the water. I decided to stick with what I have and maybe give her some new trinkets, but not get a different boat. YM of course MV.

MikeP,
Well I have the "run hard and put away wet" version of the Hatteras LRC 58. But I have to say that it is the exception to what I have seen on the water. And I have been on most of them over the 11 years I have been active in the LRC Club.
The real question is are you a LRC type of cruiser? When you get to Piney Narrows and ask for a slip and they ask if you need fuel do you say "no I just got fuel in Miami, I'm good". Or if a fellow cruiser in CoinJock say I thought I saw your boat in the Exumas last week and you say Oh yeh that was us. Then you might be a LRCer. And, of course, if you are running down the bay and a sail boat passes you, well then you may be a LRCer.
Just kidding of course, you are welcome to come up to the Sassafras River and discuss LRCs. We are fix'en ours up and will be running around the Bay in a few more weeks. She came up from south Florida in 9 days. You are welcome anytime to see our slow Hatteras.
OH and one more thing. LRCs roll but they don't fall down. THey roll slower than the 15-10s and more comfortably. THey do not roll more they roll slower. Its much much more comfortable. There are more pluses . . .

Well spoken, well said David!

Mike, I'll echo David's invitation. Whenever you're in the area (or you'd like to make a trip to Deltaville), the door is always open. Happy to take you for a spin and check Kismet out.

They're definitely NOT for everyone, but she suits our needs perfectly!

You only have to buy fuel once a year, but then it's several thousand bucks... but then you have a year to save up for more......:)

Every time I get the upgrade bug, I think about writing a $10,000.00 check to the state for the sales tax and splat, the bug is squashed. It just strikes me as an injustice.
