CNN) -- A group of suspected pirates was captured Thursday after attacking a U.S. Navy frigate in the Indian Ocean, according to a statement released by the U.S. Sixth Fleet.

The USS Nicholas reported taking fire from a suspected pirate skiff shortly after midnight local time west of the Seychelles, the statement said. The Nicholas quickly returned fire and began pursuing the skiff, which was eventually disabled. A boarding team from the Nicholas subsequently captured and detained three people, the statement said.

The team discovered ammunition and several cans of fuel aboard the skiff, which was later sunk by the Nicholas.

Two more suspected pirates were captured on a confiscated "mother ship," the statement said. The detainees will "remain in U.S. custody on board Nicholas until a determination is made regarding their disposition," it said.

The Pentagon is determining its next steps, and the suspects may be sent to Kenya to be tried in a piracy court there, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Thursday

The Nicholas, based in Norfolk, Virginia, is part of the U.S. military's Africa Command.

The waters off the coast of Somalia -- the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean -- have been plagued by Somali pirates over the last couple of years. To crack down on piracy, the international community has adopted measures including naval escorts and expanded monitoring.

Last week, one pirate was killed and several others were detained after a private security team thwarted an attack against a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, the MV Almezaan. A European Union naval force was called in to assist the vessel

It's not as rare as you might think. They have attacked naval vessels at least three times in the past year. By doing it at night, they rarely konw who they are approaching. It really is amature hour out there for the pirates, who are now venturing up to 1,000NM out to sea in open skiffs since the spring weather has improved the sea conditions. The solution to this "problem" is not at sea. It's ashore, where the culprits can adequately be "addressed".

Talk about the dumb crook of the month award. IMO the intended "victims" (in this case the USN) stopped short of eliminating a very serious problem. If their boat would have been blown out of the water (with them in it) the word would get out quickly that game time is over and they need to find other "employment". I understand that my comments are quite harsh, but in the long run, it will prove the best course of action for everyone, including the perps. Since the recorded history of mankind it has been proven time after time that human nature only respects strength. Appeasement has never worked..beating your swords into plowshears sounds good in a perfect world, but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.

When one of our sailors get's killed in boarding one of these pathetic pirate's boats, I hope the policy changes to "blow out of water to eliminate threat".

Could not agree more..... hit them hard and hit them them often!! , and the problem will go away. Eventually they will either stop, or they will end up in another dimension/physical state.

Unless we broadcast it I'd doubt anybody would even notice. How many of them go out 1000 NM in some little $#itbox and never return? I'd doubt anybody but their families ever notice.

Everybody's 100% right on the "vaporizing them" part. If you get a chance to read "Six Frigates" by Ian W. Toll, about the founding of the U.S. Navy and our history of dealing with piracy it's all in there. There's a reason for the refernce "...to the shores of Tripoli." in the Marine Corps hymn.

Those who fail to learn the lessons of history, , yadda yadda yadda...

Boarding parties board pirate boats opposite the Navy ship to keep out of the way of Seal Snipers. The pirates may get one move but that is about it. Would bet they would not even get a twitch however.

Yep, give our guys plenty of free amo and a no-rules-no-bag limit, and that should just about do the trick.

Great book. I think the same thing everytime I hear a Somalia pirate story.

How Ironic Is This?

If you read Six Frigates then you know the name of the Captain who was commanding the frigate U.S.S. Philidelphia when it was captured and it, he, and his crew held for ransom in Tripoli.....

William Bainbridge

The last time we saw that name it was on the stern of the Navy ship that stopped the hostage situation with the Maersk Alabama's captain.

History.... the answers to the future's questions are all found in the past.

Maybe I should copyright that

Scrod,

I like play on words and yes you should copywrite it. It is so true........
