make sure that the AC cant suck in air from teh bilge... return air should be from the cabin only, not from the bilge. i just discovered that the AC in the master is in a small compartment open to the space between the cabinetry and the hull, and probably to the bilges. no smell in my case but it's pulling hot humid air instead of cooler dry air from the master.

Nasty stuff likes to grow in the condensate water. I like to use clorox water in a spray bottle to spray in the ducts. This kills mold and other stuff. I would also look for holes in the return duct and make sure it is not sucking air. Does it smell like bilge or old musty sneakers?

Did what you told me re-routed the master bedroom intake and the problem went away.

Oh my gosh ... Smelly question ... Gaaaaasssssppp !!!

Does this stuff really smell "Familiar" ?

The last boat I visited smelled disturbingly like a light version of one I visited near Miami. It was Josephine Baker's 1938 Trumpy which had been a splendid boat in her time. It was the boat which prompted me into Hatteras land where the hulls are made of fibers and the smell is so sweet.

But this old Hatt had that mixture of naphtalene and botanical rot (old vase of flowers) perfume which was pervasive throughout. It made me nostalgic for the faint must after mine's been sealed up for wintering. Their only hope of selling it would be to a Cigar Smoker in need of medical treatment for agusia (numb taste buds).

At first I wondered if water had gotten into the interior bulkhead panels and rotted them from behind. All the veneer looked intact but had been stained dark brown and was god-awful ugly. Later a thought came to me (proof that anything is possible). Did deck leaks rot the hull above the waterline, or the deck coring itself?

Have any of you smelled rotted balsa? My only experience has been with rotted mahoghany and this was slightly different. Or maybe the smell doesn't come as much from the nature of the wood but is mostly characteristic of the nature of the beast eating away at it? These were some really pungent blokes!

And NO, it wasn't the shipmate's significant other stowed away - I checked her every nook and cranny and this fragrance wasn't quite as acidy as a Funeral Parlor .
