The base of the light mast on my 1979 43DC developed some rot ... so until it is repaired I've made a temporary lightmast. I'll try to attach a picture here and I've also put several pictures in my photo album. The existing mast was at an approximate 22.5 degree angle to the deck.
I made the mast from 2" diameter PVC pipe and used a 45 degree "Y" and a 22.5 degree "L". I cut 2 - 4" diameter circles out of a copolymer cutting board to use as bases to mount the light fixtures on. I inserted/glued 5/8" long pieces of PVC pipe into the part of the "Y" and "L" so that I could screw the bases on for a secure attachment. Since the "Y" was at 45 degrees, in order to get the correct angle for the base to be parallel to the deck I had to use a band saw to cut off a section at 12.5 degrees.
I ordered new light fixtures and new attachment bases for the stainless steel "stiff legs". I also ordered new mini cowl vent covers where the new wiring exited the mast. I reused the male deck plugs on the wiring. Since I couldn't use the hinged mast step base from the OEM mast I formed a hinge strap made from a 5/8" x 6" stainless steel mast tang that I bent a loop in.
A little Acetone and elbow grease removed the writing from the PVC.
In order to stiffen the mast against winds I inserted a piece of 1-1/2" PVC inside the 2" piece and secured it with screws. Looks like we're to have gale force winds tonight ... so we'll see how it holds up!
