  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' YACHT FISH -Series I (1977 - 1981)
you don't see any Hatteras in the BVIs or lower?

We just spent the last nine days sailing from St Martin to Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and St Bart. Lets just take the 150 Ft plus vessels and sailboats off the table and discuss why there were very few Hatteras while we saw several brands of other 40-70ft power boats. It was surprising that I only saw one and it wasn't like there weren't any power boats around.

just struck me as a bit funny since we would like to head that way one day when we decide to retire. Did we pick the wrong brand to take to the islands?

Well, you don't see any in HI either. I think it's just a matter of what is/was available in the local area. I suspect that not too many people cruise from the US to BVI in "smaller" powerboats. So, if there was never a Hatt dealer in Puerto Rico (I don't know if there was or not), there probably is no "baseline" of Hatts in that area. BUT...thats just speculation on my part.

As far as going there from the US in a Hatt like our 53MY...well, I wouldn't care to do it but I'm sure others here would or have. But I wouldn't care to do it in any boat of that size! :)

Its a long way to the Caribbean... 1000nm or so with some rough waters in the way.

The problem is that hatteras hasn't really built boats ll suited for the tropics until recently with the RPH or the ne 70. If you look at hatteras build between the 90s and about 7/10 years ago they are best described a short skin cancer survivor boats. Small aft deck, no side decks... perfect for old folks living north of Florida but awful for Bahamas and Caribbean where you want to be outside. I've tried to steer a few clients towards late model hatteras MY with not luck. ThAts why my latest office is an 84 Lazzara.

Now, the reason why you don't see too many older hatts down the is because while the 70s/80s and even 90s vintage hatts MY are pretty cheap, the costs of spending a winter I never the Caribbean is anything but cheap...

We had a 1984 48 MY with stabilizers named "French Lady". A great boat. We took her from Naples, Fl to Grenada in 1999 and wrote a couple of articles that appeared in Southern Boating describing the journey. We were guided by Van Sant's "book/guide A Gentleman's Passage...." and made a few passages at night and always in fair weather. It was a great trip.....and uneventful until we encountered Hurricane Lennie.
Bottom line.....the boat was well-suited to the task and my wife and I had no issues.

I have an 1981 version of the 48MY and also think it is a great boat. Are the articles you wrote available on line any where? Would love to read them.

Bob....

I don't know whether Southern Boating articles are archived online. To be honest.....I'm not even sure if I could put my hands on the two issues in which the articles were published. If the magazine is still headquartered in Miami Beach, you might be able to reach out to them to get a link.
Sorry I'm not of more help.

Thanks. Can you recall the years in which the articles were published>

Bob.....

As best as I can recall, the articles were published in or around October/ November 2000. It is possible that it was in the same months one year later. I will be home by the end of February and will make an effort to find a copy of one of the issues I believe my wife put away. I'll pm you the details if my search is successful.

Thanks. I tried to get into the archives but had no luck.

I saw a 58 YF, Charter, in Sopers Hole, Tortola, 2 years ago. Most Charters down there are blow boaters (under power). We chartered a 56 Horizon.. Just saw the 1 Hatteras, but it was standing tall!

I also think there is a 60' maximum on the moorings that are available at most harbors...........Pat

There is a Hatt 58 MY that has chartered out of St. Thomas (Red Hook if i remember correctly) for the past 10 years or so. We were on board once, the owner / Capt. is a retired US Airways pilot. Nice people. It is called Elixir.

Separately, I met a previous Hatt 58 owner last year (he saw ours in the marina and came over to say hello) that said he personally made the trip from St. Croix to Turks and Caicos. He mentioned a 36 hour stretch, must have had a good weather window.

Our 58 was in Guantanamo Bay for the 2 years prior to our ownership / stewardship.

This is an intriguing thread as my wife and I have began talking about relocating to the USVI on our Hat in about 10 years (retirement); we are on a classic, 1968 MY 50'. I looked at bouncing down through the Bahamas to TCI, then to DomRep, over to PR and on to the Virgin Islands. Of course everything after TCI is still up in the air with a lot of factors to consider since our cruising speed is 9-10 knots and fuel capacity is 600 usable.Any information on making the trip we can get would be extremely beneficial and we can tuck it away for the future. And of course anyone with similar plans for the future I would be interested in hearing from.

We chartered a Hatt 58MY with 8V71Ns "McGregor II" in BVI for a week and loved it. Great boat for VI cruising. The capt. was a certified scuba instructor and the wife a totally great cook. They knew all the great scuba spots and anchorages.
