  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
I've the same Series 1 48 Chris adn BobK and WalterP have, and mine has decking like Chris'. (No built in sun deck seating though!) My decks need refinishing. I started to strip and as I re-stained I got color blotches. (The stain was a WHOLE lot darker than the "didn't need re-staining" areas.) There's a way to bleach it down, before I re-varnish; but, I don't know what that "way" is. Do you? Does anybody?

I want mine to look like Chris'. (Yeah, I'd post photos like that too, if I could - and WILL when mine is as pretty!) What varnish did you use? How many coats?

It looks BEAUTIFUL !

Not sure what the blotches are. Is this stain that you applied and don't like the color? Are you doing it in sections? If the latter, I'd prepare it and stain it all at once therby eliminating overlap areas.

Getting off a newly applied stain, if that's what you are trying to do, may be difficult. I've applied stains to wood in the past that I didn't like and was not able to find a good way to get it all out. If you are looking just to take out natural discoloration from the sanded wood, the teak bleaches, especially the two part products ought to do a good job. Remember they may contain an acid like oxalic. Keep it off nearby paint.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. My decks are painted. Only the handrails need varnishing.

Is your decking teak and caulk. You could sand it down to clean wood and then use your finish of choice. I used Epifanes 2 part high gloss .Sanding is not too hard, just rent a floor sander. I used the dual action type rather than the drum sander. The dual action is less agressive, less chance to make a mistake. Then just apply 5 or 6 coats of varnish.

Question (s)

Did you use a chemical stripper ?

Next, what do you mean by "stain" ?

Brand and color will help the answers.
