I realized after running out of water in the shower(after I fully lathered up) that I really need to fix my water level indicator or gauge.

What I have is a gauge that is about 1 1/2" wide that sits on top of the tank. When you remove the gauge assembly (looks like1-1/2 NPT) there are two metal probes that go down into the tank, at the end of the probes they make a 90 toward each other. There are two brown wires that attach to each side of the gauge and a ground that attaches to the face. It is stuck on 3/4 tank, when I remove the wires and/or take it out of the tank nothing happens.

I am not sure how this system works so I can diagnose the problem, do I test for Ohms? beat it with a hammer? drink a beer and scratch my head?

fill the tank every time you go out

Yea Billy, I had to sit naked and foamy in the dry shower while Mickey took the 5 gal bucket to get water(no water at peir at the time)

I like to flush as much water through the tank as I can, I dont use the city water hookup only the tank. Also, I add a little bleach when I fill so I want the tank to be almost empty before I refill and add more bleach.

LOL, I know that feeling all too well. It never happens unless I'm in the shower. And I don't have anyone to fetch water. So, I leave the city water connected and have a shut off at the connection point on the boat just outside the pilothouse door. So, when it happens, I just step outside the door for a split second and turn the water on. Good thing I've never been caught on the Hatt cam yet! LOL

Obviously, I need water tank gauges, too. I have the old Rochester gauges which are long gone. Besides, to check them, I'd have to lift a mattress or crawl over the master bed and open some access panels. Not something I'd be wanting to check often due to the hassle to do so. I want a gauge on the wall or the lower helm that is staring at me all the time.

Am guessing every boater has had that happen.

Just the reason I stay hooked to the city water but do have a water meter (from Home Depot) connected to it on the dock that I set at 200 gals.

That way when I'm on the dock I just have to reset it before it hits zero....

Ang,

The Rochester gauges have both a needle pointer and a built in electric sender for a remote gauge like the original one probably on your lower helm station. The senders are available from Rochester still and just sit in that little dish on top of the tank sensor, operated by a magnet inside the sensor. If the sensor still works inside the tank and the wires are there, it's easy to replace the sender top. I have a new gauge top (needle/sender) for you if Rochester doesn't have any left. e-mail me at dshumans@gmail.com.

Doug, there is nothing left of them. The part of the gauge that sits inside the tank has long rotted away. The gauge is nothing more than a cap to the tank now. On the other tank, I have no idea - I've never been able to open that tank, even with a long cheater bar. The gauge on it always read full or empty, can't remember which, so I suspect it's dipstick is long gone too.

charlie, what is the part number, model, manufacturer, of the water counter that you have? i have been looking for something like this, and all i can find is water (timers) they shut off after a set amount of time, not a set amount of gallons. i use city water alot, but get concerned about hoses inside the boat breaking and sinking the boat. a counter would stop it before that could happen.. thanks for any info. bigbill

bump... charlie, i am still looking for the info on a water meter, all i can find is water timers, these wont work....if you are in the shower, and the time runs out, you stay soapy. any info that you have on your meter would be a big help. thanks, bigbill

Bill - looking for this? https://birdoff.com/watercounter.php

I installed one last year - pretty straight forward. If you have any leaks (like a dripping faucet), I found the readings can be way off. I really do like it though, it's a great reference for guest on the boat to get a visual on why they can't keep the water running in shower or doing dishes like they do at home.
