  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
I've been looking for a 7" tablet to run Active Captain off line using an Android OS as well as have a maps/driving program to use in France later this year. I don't need cell phone capability, but would like WIFI for Email and internet when in range. I came across this unit which seems almost to good to be true. It has built in GPS and WIFI, two cameras, both AC and 12V chargers etc. Am I missing something? Anybody know the vender?

Bob, you could e-mail Jeff Seigal who owns Active captain. He'll set ya straight. He has a website called "Taking Paws". Its about him and his wife and two Big labador dogs. Kinda cool to follow. Thats another site I follow.

Pate, Jeff and Karen seem to be up to their eyeballs in the business. I've had them respond to so many questions recently I hate to ask more. And Jeff seems to be much more focussed on Apple $$ stuff.

Tom Slane Jr just mention this on a thread and mention the Nexus 7 it double the money but better name behind it also more memory. I would want more memory than the one you listed.

I have been thinking about one but still holding off let us know what you do?

Dan,

I did see Tom's post and researched the Nexus 7 for my application and rejected it for some reason that I can't remember (CRS disease) right now. Perhaps because it didn't support Flash Player which is necessary for running Active Captain? I'll have to reinvestigate. The extra $ is not an issue.

Bob

I really dont see the love affair with apple products. I got an Ipad because my daughter talked me into it for some unknown reason.......I'm second guessing myself if I made the correct choice. Maybe that Nexus 7 is a good deal.

Thanks Dan. I didn't see a GPS listed and that would be needed for any nav proram. The SD card slot is a good feature.

Yes I see it did not say that but a lot of times these adds just Suck and are missing items.
I found it hard to believe they did not so as per Samsung help chat it does.

Chat Information You are now chatting with 'Henry'. There will be a brief survey at the end of our chat to share feedback on my performance today.

Chat Information Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK56402718399X

Henry: Hi, thanks for reaching out to Samsung tech support. How can I help you today?

Visitor: Does the Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 2 7.0 (Wi-Fi) 8GB

Visitor: Have a GPS in it

Henry: Are you referring to Gt-P3113?

Visitor: yes

Henry: Yes, it has GPS feature.

Visitor: Thanks

Henry: You're welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Visitor: No thanks

Not the first time and ran across this sometimes you need to go to about 2-3 different places to find all the info.
Technology at its finest ;)

Thanks again Dan. I checked with Samsung and unfortunately Adobe Flash Player is no longer available for Android OS. As I understand it, for interface off line to Active Captain only Nutiteq will run on Android and it requires flash. One other smaller issue is the Tab 2 7" does not have a camera for Skype.????

I guess I'll forget about tablets until something else comes along. I don't want it bad enough to support Apple products pricing.

Ha-Ha, Bob, seem like the way to go, BUT, as I write my wife and I are face timing (like SKype) talking to my daughter in Greenville, SC with our Ipad. Yeah, the Video thing is great. I cant download the Flash required for active capt too. I did purchase Garmin Bluechart, so it will run through that Nav program ($29.95), but I still miss the regular active capt features. Bob, you may get a used Ipad. People are always upgrading for some reason.

Well my plan has come together after doing lots more research.

The Nexus 7 unit has the latest and greatest OS, Android Jellybean, and that one does NOT work with Adobe Flash. The Android version is too new and Adobe is no longer supporting it. Also Nexus 7 has no provision for expanding memory and has somewhat limited ability to link to other stuff. They also had some manufacturing issues and were a PITA to deal with in making good on the problems.

However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7" has gotten high marks vs the Nexus 7 in almost all areas except speed. Gamers like the Nexus for that. I could care less. It also has expandable memory and will easily link to my laptop for data transfer. The Android version in it is Ice Cream Sandwich (WTH do they get these names) and this one WILL run Adobe Flash Player. So far so good, then I learned from Nauti Charts Lite that their navigation program doesn't rely on Flash. Oh well, all the extra research leaves me feeling I made the right choice. I ordered the Tab2 7", extra memory (32GB), and a starter kit that has 12 and 120V chargers and a Blue Tooth key board/protective case/stand for a total of $250. Now I just need to learn how to set it up and use it.

Why do you want flash compatibility? You only need it to use Active Captain ON LINE via their website.

OFFLINE, none of the apps that support AC need the flash player

I almost never use the AC website, except to create a new marker (rare). To update markers (data or reviews) I use navimatic Charts n Tides and to view data i use the new Garmin App .

So no need for Flash.

Speaking of the garmin App, I ve been using it for a few months now, including a few weeks in the Bahamas. I really like it. It has a nice track feature which allows you to save tracks with a meaningful name. I use that when I need to find a safe route like on the bank side of the exumas by taking the tender (has a sounder) and checking depths while recording the track. I can then save it and use it when taking the boat thru. Obviously you still need to read the water but no matter how good you are, 6.5' is hard to differentiate with 8' and it can be the difference between a good day vs a bad day!

And the Bahamas charts are excellent...

On the downside, there is no signal lost warning and no LAT/LON nrs to cross check accuracy with another GPS

Pascal, That's the part that I was confused about. But I'll put Flash on it anayway in case I need it for something else. Changes/mods to AC are done with the laptop inside the boat.

Bob, Thats what I do, use the laptop and want to use the Ipad to navigate. Using the Garmin program, the AC stuff shoes up in the program automatically. I guess I can live with it. OH Yeah ,
$250 !!!! DANG It !! I paid way too much for mine. Thats what I get for not doing my home work.

Bob doing all the research is always a good thing even if you don't need it all, and you learn things like about Ice Cream ;) WTH. Sounds like a nice deal Samsung has also pulled ahead in their smart tvs so they have been a Major leader. Please give updates after you get it.

Here is the update. First, Nutiteq is the only (I think) company making a chart program for Android that provides off line charts/data from Active Captain that will follow the GPS position. The charts have to be loaded directly to the tablet via WiFi or cell link (lots of data). The Nutiteq web site's directions are not very explicit and it took several emails to figure out how to do it. The tech support however was very responsive!! And they are open to suggestions.

I took the Samsung tablet out for a test run of about ten miles yesterday in the Angler CC. The raster charts were perfectly visible in sunlight or under the bimini when the brightness function was set to automatically adjust for light. I turned it up to the max setting and it was beautiful, even with polarized sun glasses. The program needs a bit of refining to get it to self locate if you scroll away from center. The fix is to turn off the program, turn off the GPS, reboot the tablet then turn on the GPS function and allow it to load, then turn on the charting program.

We ran a few miles out of the charted region and returned and the position indicator followed all the way.

One of the negatives is the position indicater. It is a small dot which is hard to see even knowing it is in the center of the display. I've asked for a larger one with an arrow to indicate direction of travel and I believe they plan to work on it. We shall see.

Total cost for the program with charts from Florida to NJ was about $50. I'm fairly satisfied now that I am over the trials and tribulations of getting it operational.
