Paul, thanks for the tip on the Perko ladder. Tom suggested one made by GG Schmitt as a good one because it mounts under the platform and out of the way. It has a little lever so that you can deploy it from the water. This way he said if you ever were to fall overboard you could climb back aboard by yourself. Hmmm. Scary thought, but it could happen. It sounded good to me until I saw that it is $850!

Is that Perko ladder similar to the original one that hinged on the platform and folded up against the transom? While I agreed with Tom about un-cluttering the transom, I like the look of a ladder folded on a transom if I can save $800! Then again, now that I extended the platform from 26" to 30" that ladder will not lay on the transom when folded. Bummer.

TH,

my bad, I was speaking of a folding step to mount to the transom to make it easier to step into the cockpit.

let me research a bit for you and I will find something, I am sure, that will be nice and much less $$$

But have to get ready now.

Wifey said we are going to movies and dinner........LOL, But I am paying

So tonight/ tomorrow I will have you an answer.

Paul, THANK YOU but no rush, it will be mid-February until I get the new platform from Slane. Just need to find something and be ready by then.

Have a great evening!

My swim platform has zincs attached to each of the supports. Seems to me this is odd, not sure, but I doubt the supports are tied to the electrical ground... Any thoughts?

While I understand the theory of bonding everything, I am by no means an authority on the subject. However, it has been standard practice to tie every peice of metalic hardware that touches the water to a bonding strap inside the boat. This includes the swim platform brackets.

I have seen zincs on some brackets before, though I do not think it is a standard practice.

If you can see the through bolts of those brackets inside the lazerette, there should be a wire connecting those to a bonding strap.

So, how deep can a swim platform be? I've seen a 44' Hatteras that had a 36" teak platform that had stainless rails around it so that it could be used like an aftcockpit safely. I've also seen another brand with an even larger platform similarily constructed with stainless braces that attached to the transom just below the deck and then attached to the stainless railing on the platform. What issues are involved here?

Thanks for your input.

I think there are two main issues.

One the backsplash effect that has been spoken about in this thread. There can be alot of pressure from the wave comming up from under the platform.

The other is how well the bracing is installed on and through the transom.

Height and relief cuts in the platform can take care of the first issue and the proper support can take care of the second issue.

I expect there is a point where an add-on swim platform will reach it's maximum safety issue with both.

We have all seen very large swim platforms that are part of the hull , and those I expect are the strongest but are also designed with the way that craft rides.

I have seen larger than factory size swim platforms installed, and 2 inparticular that had the hydraulic lifts installed so the platform will lower into the water and a jet ski driven onto the chocks, then the platform is raised.

From what I have seen and have read, if it were me adding on a 30" or better platform, I would make sure the bottom supports were more than just adequate and I would add corner bracing above the platform to the transom.

The extra top bracing, and they do not have to be an eyesore or get in the way, would add alot of strength and structural support.

Maybe there is some one here who has increased the size much more than the regular 24-30" and give som,e input on to what they have done.

Thanks, Paul. I hope to hear from someone who has had experience with this. In the meantime I'll try to find the pics of the examples I referenced and attach them. The 44' Hatt with the stainless railing around a 36" platform was recently sold on yachtworld. It was in Guntersville, AL. The other was actually on a 58' Hatt YF and was sold back in '05. It was really well built, perhaps over done even.

Well the Platform is about finished as far as the wood goes.

So I painted it blue.........

Not really, I taped off the wood so I could caulk the seams.

And here is the caulk job

Yep pretty ugly right now. Thats one reason I use the tape. After this sets for a week or so, I will remove the tape.

Peeled the tape..........

still have a few little touch-ups to do, but here it is..........

Paul, that looks fantastic !!!

Nice job Paul. That really looks GREAT. I bet you can't wait to get it on the boat. I don't know what kind of swim-ladder your looking for, but I have a telescoping one that pulls out from under my platform. Its not the strongest but it will support a 250+lb. person with out any trouble. I don't remember the name. West sells them for around a buck and a half.

LOOKING GOOD!!!
Did you put the windows in yet or are you waiting till after paint?

Thanx Bill, Rick, Hwginc, and 34Hatt............

I think it was 34Hatt ??? who may have been asking about the ladder.

But I buy wholesale from many distributors....so try and stay away from the retail end..... ;) , sort of "last resort" !!

Oh,

I thought we put some pics on here of the windows, But I do have some on my website for sure. Stll have to install the remaining 4 on the pilot house. The center tilt out is in...........Diver Down visited me, and saw the windows.

He and his wife: Vey nice people.......And next time, lunch is on me :D

Hope to post some pics on the interior trim later this week. ( Like to get it mostly done before showing.)..........LOL

Paul, That was me asking about an undermount ladder for my new Slane platform. It should be done this week and paint next week, so I need to find a ladder!

Any ideas?

TH,

Have you found a ladder ?

I have been out of town the last few days .

But Chris, being the slave driver he is ........ ;) wanted to see something today, so I spent a few hours outside and installed this stainless rail and put on one coat of teak oil.

Still a few little things to tweak, but basically it is done. :D

Holy cow! That looks great Paul. :D

:D

Thought you might like this .

I ordered my platform from http://www.fibertechcorp.com/ The ladder is powder coated and slides out from under the platform folding and extending down. It is rigid when it's fully extended allowing for a very easy climb up onto the swim platform. Paul's platform is a work of art, looks beautiful. You could contact Fibertech to find out where the boarding ladder is built. It's 5 years old now and still looks like new, albeit in fresh water.
