Submerged boat found in middle of Lake Ontario.

This 42-foot motorized cruiser was towed into Port Dalhousie harbour Thursday night after Halton, Hamilton and Niagara police units and the Canadian Coast guard found it wallowing in the waves in the middle of Lake Ontario that afternoon.The boat’s registered owner is believed to have been alone on board when the boat sailed from Oakville Wednesday. Police divers searching a partially submerged yacht all day for the body of its Oakville owner have turned up nothing.The 74-year-old Oakville man is now a missing person case.

The boat was located Thursday at 3:50 p.m., about 22 kilometres off Port Dalhousie, or about the middle of the lake. An investigation is also under way to find out how the boat became submerged.

Instant reaction: old woodie, bad fasteners and/or rot, loss of boyancy/flotation. I thought those were marine plywood, instead of carvel planked.

The largest of the mid-sixties Owens Yacht line, Aruba models were double planked mahogany over plywood. There are not many of these boats still existing.

Later news reports on this story say that there is bottom damage consistent with a grounding. The 74 year old owner's cat was found clinging to the cabin roof that was still protruding above the waves. The cat was rescued and returned to the owner's wife.

When I was a kid the back of every boating mag had a Owens ad with some celeb. on their Owens Jonny Carson, Diana shore,Donna Reed. I got yelled at once for sticking my finger thru one that was rotted back by the transom.We were next to it in the boat yard and the guy just got done painting over the rot. And that was back in the 60's when they were fairly new.

No, there are no rocks other than along the shoreline. Lake Ontario is our deepest lake in the Province.

I thought they were single planked with oak stringers. They all seemed to have bad transoms. A friend had ones years ago that was given to him. He re-planked the entire transom and most of the bottom. I think he eventually gave the boat away as it was consuming all his time and money just to keep it afloat.

I remember the wood boat guys telling my father when he bought the 34Hatt that those plastic boats wont last.

My 1966 Owens 30ft was doubled planked. I had zero rot when I sold it in 72 to buy a 37ft EGG Harbor. Single planked with transom rot. The Owens was just too small.

We had heavy storms on Lake Erie Wednesday night. Maybe he recieved the same thing Thursday morning.
