I have spent many years doing interior varnishing and your work is impressive.

You now need to hand out sunglasses for all your family, friends and other visitors!

Jon

Thanks, we did joke around about having to ware sunglasses!

Did you apply any awl brite or was it only awl spar? Also how often and what grit do you use to sand between coats? Very impressed.

Thanks, started off with 80 to 120 grit on the da to strip most spots, being careful not to go through the veneer. The stepped to 180 the 320 grit with da and blocks. Next vacuum everything and wiped it down with paint prep solvent. Tack raged and applied sealer coat of awlspar. Let dry and sanded everything with 320 grit and repated the process. Aplyed more awlspar. Sanded between most coats with 320 to 400 grit. We used a combination of da and long boards and blocks. We also did some wet sanding when we had enough coats on there. That helped to keep the dust down. I would say there is about 13 coats on there. Around 20 or so quarts of awlspar only. We did final wet sand with 1500 grit then 3000 grit. Then we buffed it. It was really labor intensive. It was three months or so of weekends.

Reflection in the wall. Alwspar itself is very easy to use. I used in the pilot house of my last boat and it was also very durable. I have had issues with awlclear separating on the bridges over time. Alwspar seams more flexible.

Did you consider using Awlwood even though it's primary application is for exterior use?

I am assuming that you always sanded between coats and did not layer the next coat of varnish on without sanding. Your technique of wet sanding and use of really fine grits is something I have never tried.

Love the pictures....worth the effort.

Jon

I looked at awlwood, but I have had such good results with the awlspar that I don’t want to switch anything up. Plus the price is good, around $32 a quart. I did layer some coats, as you can with the awlspar. There is a window, i belive 24 hours, but I would have to look at the tech sheet for the exact time. Thanks.

Whoa - Awesome work.

I own a sistership to your beauty. A 1988 63' Viking/Gulfstar MY. We should compare notes.

Thank you, this is second 63 that we have owned. We really like the layout. Is yours a walk around or widebody?

Walk around.

Was a "must have" per my wife. Looked a a few wide bodys and she nixed them all.

Gulfstar did a great job with their woodwork and cabinetry. My dad bought a new 49MY in 1983, hull #7. But this high gloss really sets it off. Nice work.

Sky, I remember that boat when you were at the Spring Lake Holiday Inn summer of 1988. We talked a couple of times and you were always a gentleman and very knowledgable.
