  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' DOUBLE CABIN (1963 - 1966)
I found a great deal on a pair of Steyr 256 diesel engines. I'm wondering what you all know about these engines. They are brand new in the crates and will fit perfectly in my 34DC so I'm hoping they have a good reputation.

If I'm not mistaken, some Yanmars are Steyr, but not all. Not sure which ones.

Hi:

The bigger YANI's are made by SCANIA (9.0L). Steyr I believe is made in Austria.

I saw Steyr engines on display at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show a couple of years ago, maybe 2008? They were just making their introduction to the U.S. Market. Not sure how well they have been received because this is only the third time that I have heard anything about them since then.

My biggest concern would be who would perform warranty work and where to source parts, not to mention how will it affect resale down the road if nobody has heard of them.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Can't remember where I saw the Yanmar/Steyr connection. Maybe it was Scania.

I've also read that some Yanmars are Toyota's.

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

Just saw that elsewhere today online..attributed to George Orwell....

I like it!!!

Not much response to your inquirey yet. I bought two of the older 213hp Steyrs a few years back to put in my 28' SF but haven't gotten around to it yet. I wish I had the 256's and I wish mine were brand new, but if wishes were horses........... I hope some one out there gives you some better, more specific info. Otherwise, try boatdiesel.com Howard in west Michigan

Very proud new owner of a pair of brand new Steyr 256's. Picking them up on tuesday in St. Augustine. Will post pics once the install gets going.

You should pay the $25 if you have not already and join over at boatdiesel.com They were a ton of help for me as well as members on this site. I'm sure others will agree to this.

Congrats on the new engines. The work has just begun....I did this about three years ago and never sorry I did it.

Yep, the boat diesel site is great and is especially valuable while you are looking for a boat and/or getting acquainted with diesels. I was a member for a year back around 04-05. I found a point at which it didn't seem to me to be useful any more but I really recommend it at the beginning.
