  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
I've been casually looking for a set of spares for awhile. Found a potential set.

Mine are 4 blade, 28 x 27; 2" shaft

The set I found are: 4 blade, 26 x 29; 2" shaft

1. Will these work as spares?

2. Where do people store their spares on the boat?

3. Any other considerations?

Thanks,

Cheryl

As get homes they'll probably work. If your props now are right on a second identical set would be best. Then you can switch between and not have to change them out twice.

On my 53' CPMY I store them forward of the genset against the bulkhead. I have a 1" thick piece of starboard on the deck and a thick towel between the starboard on the props to keep them from scratching everything up and/or dulling the edge of the blade. It's a b*tch getting them in and out but they're secure and out of the way. Also keeps that weight low in the boat. I also now have a spare shaft on board too which currently is stowed behind the couch.

The PO had them in the master state closet but they cut the carpet all to hell and scratched up the closet not to mention the XO couldn't put enough shoes in the closet with them in there.

Cheers,
Ryan

My props are stored under ythe trolling chair in the bilge. I extended the bolt with a stainless threaded bar. The props are pulled up tight to the floor underneath with starboard as a washer. Every once iwhile i put a wrench on the to be sure they are tight. Talk about tight to get them in there its tuff but they seem to be ok. Do not have a spare shaft.

I had a pair of 28x28x2 4 blades for sale for a long time. Where were you then? The 26" wheels will work but they're not ideal. You should be able to find a pair as they were a common size for a few different Hatts. Have you called SAMs? If they don't have them right now they may get them or locate a pair for you

I have a spare set of wheels as well. They are mounted nicely in the cockpit laz. Nice and secure. My question is why do I need a spare set? They have been back there since I bought the boat in '05. If I ding a prop I just have it repaired and move on.

I put mine on the boat because i fish some time out of the reach of a repair station. But now that you mention it i womder if a diver could chamge them they are bad boys ...

Having a second or spare set allows you to swap them out and not have to wait for the old ones to be redone.

It's easy enough to have a diver switch them or do it with a short haul. No need to be on the hard for any length of time.

Can divers handle these big wheels. Takes two on land.

Did a pair on a 58 yf. Also some in the 36" diameter range. Takes 2 and a lift bag but when your not near a lift things can be more exciting.

They can easily be changed in the water. My neighbor has big 5 blade wheels on a 65 Marquis. They must be around 44". He has a habit of banging them up and the divers change them out at least 3-4 times a season.

Thanks for all the thoughts on this. I think I will pass on the particular set I found and take another look at Sam's, holding out for the right fit. I talked to Steve awhile back and he had identified a potential set. It's just been on the back burner for awhile and I've been working on other things.

Sounds like storing them on the boat will be kind of a PITA but hopefully it's the kind of thing that wouldn't be needed frequently. I think for me the best place will be in the gen room. I typically cruise familiar waters but you never know. Just something I'd like to have on board just in case.

Ours are secured under the master bed, just like the day I bought it, and suspect they were there originally. Gen room would make sense if starting anew.

Cheryl- I used to keep a spare set on my boats when I had the 46 and 53... in the
generator room. After a decade or so of banging my noggin into them every time i put water in the batteries, I decided it was best to leave them ashore in a tool trailer that I keep at my marina for storage.

Doing the math on the shorter distances I was running (within a 100 mile window) it just sounded easier to run them to any potential incident than carry around several hundred pounds of props and then fight them out of the generator room if i ever needed them.

I have a brownie style, hookah dive compressor aboard so, while I certainly could swap them in situ... knowing myself though, it is hard to think of a situation where I would not haul the boat to make sure there was no strut rudder or cutlass bearing damage done during whatever incident damaged my props anyway. So the short version is... if I were cruising out island, far away from marina services, I would carry spares. If I am puddling up and down my home area or even making runs north and south up the ditch... I personally would not bother.

Good point on the storage, Sandspur- I was wondering about that as well. Sounds like a good idea as there's just no optimal place to store them on the boat.

Freebird- I must have missed your props, will send you a PM.

How much did you get out of yours? PM's are good if you don't want to say in public. I told Cheryl that I figured mine are worth half of what new ones would run. Mine were originally 28 x 30, but I had them add 2" when they reconditioned the props. I'm sure they could be re-pitched to 28 or maybe even to 27 for a perfect match.
