  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
OK ... I realize that I am very fortunate to have a village dock spot in Sag Harbor, N.Y. for next to nothing. But ... life circumstances have me doing a move to Fla. for the next several years. I thought of bringing the "old girl' south and maybe even living on her for a while. The marinas that I know (Bahia Mar, Pier 66, Marina Bay) are all CRAZY money !! Pier 66 would be 24K for a slip for the year for my 45C. My girlfriend has a blace in a canal with a slip, but it won't hold the 45. We have/had thought of selling that and getting a waterfront place with a slip to hold a 45.
At 2k a month to keep the boat ... the buying of a place with a bigger slip makes a ton of sense.
What marinas in the commutable to Ft Lauderdale area allow liveaboards and are reasonably priced ?
thanks

I had shuttled "the Bird" around in the fall to case marinas from Pompano Beach to Palm Beach. Sands Harbor right at Atlantic Blvd. & the ICW allowed liveaborads and was the cheapest by a comfortable margin -- $1700/mth, as I recall, for Randy's 58. Maybe he remembers exactly. You can send Freebird a PM...I think he still lurks out there somewhere.

I kept Strategic Plan at Marina Bay on SR84 for many months and as I recall the annual slip lease rates were acceptable (for that area) if you signed a 1 year Lease. By-the-month rentals really paid a premium amount$$$. Nice facilities and a well kept marina. I stayed aboard through Hurricane Frances there and I guess it was as good as anywhere else. Only 1 of their 10 floating docks sunk, along with every 2 story 'houseboat/condo'.

Rivera Beach Marina just north of West Palm has reasonable transient rates. Not a place I like, except for the price. Fair current through the the docks and poor hurricane protection. But if price is the main issue, maybe......

if you dont' need to liveaboard, there are many private docks available for rent on canals for cheaper than marinas... owners of canal front homes with no boats trying to make a few $... a few years back i used a service called Dockfinders (dont' have contact info) to find a place to dock my old boat while it was for sale...

do you have to be near FTL for work or other reasons ? the waters further south in miami are much nicer ! up in FTL, it's the ICW or the ocean... going up n down in no wake zones gets old very quickly and unless you're into fishing getting beat up in the ocean isnt that much fun...

I'm figuring near Ft Lauderdale, as that is where I'll be working ... Las Olas

marina bay in fort lauderdale is reasonable [yearly] also clean with pool, health club, restaurant and near las olas. also try isle of venice off of las olas-good luck with the search !

I'm pretty sure all the towns in the immediate vicinity of Ft. Lauderdale do not allow liveaboards at private docks behind people's homes; plus, I've heard that it would be difficult to find an owner that would want you living back behind his house, anyway. I think you'll have to be finding a marina slip. Good luck.

Well, this has NOTHING to do with South FL, but I used to keep my old boat a couple of slips down from Pascal at DKM and I think I've either over-nighted or hung out at darn near every marina on the FL-East side at one point or another, but I just got a bill for my first month of dockage in Alabama.

Including power (2x50amp)...... $244 for the month

I miss south Florida. I miss the water and the ability to find parts and service staff who don't think I'm bonkers when I say "32 volts".

I just thought I'd throw that out there to add a bit of dock price envy to y'all.

Hummm.... we don't seem to have the appropriate "emoticon" (smilie) from our limited selection for that response!

From one South Floridian who feels the pinch every month....
