Sound absorbing coating

I have an exterior hard top (fiberglass but hollow) on my new boat and the underside is thin fiberglass. The exhaust note seems to bounce off the underside of the top making a sort of echo chamber. I've been researching sound absorbing paint to help rectify the situation. Some simply use microspheres (glass bubbles) mixed into paint then add coats for thickness, others use rubber bits. Some are water based latex and others two part. Has anyone experimented with this? The surface is smooth gel coat now but I could live with a textured white finish provided it helps quiet things down.

Mike, would gluing out-door carpet to the top make more sense? It would have better sound deadening properties.

The best sound ablative paints turn the sound energy I to beat. Although I doubt even a Detroit could cause a fire I've not seen it used in that way.


Have you looked at other ways to cut the reflections?

Maybe a canvas across the back a few inches wide?

take a look online at sound attenuating ceiling panels. There is all manner of geometric shapes and sizes etc. Not recommending the use of these tiles, but to gauge the concept in reducing sound transmission.

Are you sure it's reflected not transmissive sound?

If the top vibrates from the mounts it's a bell.

I was thinking the same. In which case, judiciously placed pieces of dense rubber would reduce the ringing. Test this by placing a hand or two in different places on the 'bell' and see if the sound level drops appreciably.

After shopping many different styles and brands we settled on a 53 Canoe Cove. Finding a boat that met our requests (galley up, fwd master, cockpit and door for the doggies) was tough. We wanted to stay with Hatteras but we couldn't find anything. Hope the nice folks here let me stay around

What's the history of them, I never heard of the brand.

I just spent a week at the yard getting a new bottom job, replacing all of the seacocks, new cutlass bearings, trim tab actuators, lights, etc. Today it's bilge pumps/switches then pull the head off the generator which is suffering from valve erosion. Having bigger fish to fry I've had to put the coating on the back burner. She has a pair of 671ti's 450hp which gives her an 18kt cruise, 22kt wot but she seems happy and economical at 9-10kts where we plan on running her. The interior looks like a war zone right now with everything going on, once the new carpet and furniture go in next week I'll post a few more pics. This has to be one of the best forums around with a wealth of info with little to no drama unlike some other sites

Nice Boat! Is there a way to inspect the innards of your mufflers while she's out? Maybe a video inspection tool not unlike the one our proctologists use on us? We have 6-71Ns and I think our mufflers have hallowed out over the years.

With the exception of the bottom paint yours truly is doing everything else. As for the mufflers I found a pair of Marine Exhaust Systems Slim line 38's on eBay for a good price, only issue was the inlets/outlets were all wrong so I modified them to fit. They work well cutting the noise about 70% at idle and around 50% at cruise.
